This tool is a semantic search prototype for The National Archives’ Find Case Law service. Using custom-trained embedding models, the tool suggests legal alternatives to search terms based on their semantic similarity in the Find Case Law corpus compared to embeddings trained on the British National Corpus.
The tool identifies keywords from a natural language query and suggests a number of semantically similar terms that are more likely to appear in a legal corpus based on nearest neighbour and cosine similarity calculations. Terms marked in red have a particularly high semantic shift in a legal context and are therefore presumed to have a specific legal meaning. Clicking on a suggested term takes the user to the Find Case Law search interface with said term pre-filled.
