There are two versions of the Michigan Early Modern English Materials included on this tape. One retains every special character marked in the original file, rendering them in the style &char; where char is the character that followed an asterisk. Such characters include the long s and more common special forms of characters such as r and m, and so are rendered &s; &r; and &m;. This file is called MEMEM.spec-chars.Z and is compressed (standard UNIX "compress"). The other file retains only & ampersand &A; upper case ash &a; lower case ash &O; upper case oe ligature &o; lower case oe ligature &D; upper case edth &d; lower case edth &T; upper case thorn &t; lower case thorn &L; pound symbol &ss; eszet and is found as MEMEM. The files are compiled from a hodgepodge of pattern-matching routines whose validity was loosely "checked" with multidocs.
