A Copy of a Letter to the Lord Major of York Dated Whitehall July 29. 1696.

My Lord

THE Lords Commissioners of his Majesties Treasury, takeing Notice of a Scandalous Reflection as well upon their Lord-ship's; as upon Alderman Thompson of the City of York; as if my Lords had directed Six Hundred Pounds to be paid to him, to be Destributed amongst the Poor of York City; and that he had Converted, the greatest part thereof to his own use; Their Lordships Command me to Acquaint you; as well in Vindication of themselves as of the said Alderman Thompson against the said aspersion: That their Lord-ships Directed no such Summe to be paid to him, nor know of any Summe whatsoever paid to him or any other for that purpose, and they desire your Lord-ship to Communicate this matter in the City of York; for Satisfaction of all persons, that may otherwise lye under Misinformation therein: I am with all Respect.

My Lord
Your Lord-ships, Most Obedient Servant William Lowndes.
