A Briefe of the Act for the reliefe of the Marchants of the Estaple.

FIrst, that the Marchants of the Estaple of England are and haue been a verie auncient and famous Company, of greate esteeme with strangers in other nations; Profitable members of this Common wealth, and in times past great aduauncers of the Kinges customes and reuenues.

Secondlie, that the said Company aswel by diuers lawes and statutes of this realme, as by letters patents from his highnes progenitors, haue had power and authoritie to keepe the Estaple in England, at Westminster and London; and beyond the seas, in France Flaunders Zealand, Brabant and else where.

Thirdlie, that the said Cōpany are enabled by diuers lawes & Letters-patents to buy all sortes of woolls and woolfells within this Realme, and to transported so much of the same woolls as are fit for the Staple, and to sell the rest againe in England.

Fourthlie, that the Kinges Maiestie and his Councell haue of late prohibited and whollie restrained the said Company from their auncient trade of shipping and transporting.

Fiftly, that the Company being not suffred to transport haue put their woolls to sale in England to their great losse.

Sixtlie, that many of the Company haue been sued and exceedinglie molested by Informers for selling the same woolls in England, which they were abso­lutely commanded not to transport.

They humbly therefore desireThat whensoeuer the said Company of Marchants of the Estaple of England are or shalbe prohibited and restrayned from their accustomed shipping and tran­sporting of their woolls and woolfells, That then it maie bee lawfull for the said Company to sell their woolls and woolfells in England without penalty or forfeiture.
