BY THE KING. A Proclamation for recalling His Maiesties Subiects from the Seminaries beyond the Seas, and putting the Lawes against Iesuites and Popish Priests in execution.

THE Kings most Excellent Maiestie being lately put in minde by the humble petition of the Lords spirituall and temporall, and Commons assembled in Parliament of the increase of Papists within His Maiesties Dominions, and the dangerous consequences of the same: And discerning thereby to his exceeding ioy and comfort in t hat representatiue body of this Realme, & in his louing Subiects in general, a true & hearty zeale & affection to God's true Religion, which he well knoweth hath only power to bind the conscience to loyalty and obedience, is desirous that His faithfull Subiects may reciprocally take notice of His Maiesties readines & constant resolution to maintaine the same true Religion professed, and by Law established within this Realme, and vpon all occasions to suppresse the contrary. And therefore whereas His Maiestie hath bin informed that diuers Children both of Noblemen, and others His naturall Subiects haue bin heretofore sent ouer into the Seminaries, Schooles, or other Houses of Popish religion beyond the Seas, and are there remaining to be brought vp contrary to the Lawes here established. His Maiesty straitly chargeth and commandeth, That all the said Children doe before Christmas day next returne into their Natiue Countries, and submit themselues to His Maiestie's Lawes, & conforme themselues to liue in such duty & obedience as becommeth good Subiects. And that their Parents, Tutors, Gouernors, & such others as haue bin, or are faulty either in sending, permitting, or maintaining them there, take present order to recall them home, & to prouide that they be returned into their own Countries vpon the day aforesaid vpon paine of the vttermost seuerity of His Maiestie's Iustice to be extended in that behalfe, And his Maiesty doth also vpon like paine straightly charge & command, That no Bishop, Priest, or other person hauing taken, or which shall take order by, or vnder any authority, or power deriued from the Sea of Rome, which he or they be naturall borne Subjects, Denizens, or Strangers, doe presume to conferre any Ecclesiasticall orders, or exercise any Ecclesiasticall function, or jurisdiction whatsoeuer, towards, or vpon any of his M •ies natural borne Subiects within this Realme, or any other his Majesties Dominiōs. His Maiesty doth also giue expresse charge & cōmandemēt vnto all & singular Iudges, Iustices & others to whō the same appertaineth, That all the Lawes and Statutes now standing in force, be put in due execution against all Iesuits, Seminary Priests, & others, hauing taken orders by any authority from the Sea of Rome being His Maiesties Subiects, which from & after the last day of September next comming shalbe found within His Maiestie's Dominions, which day His Maiesty doth by this Proclamation limit & prefixe for the vttermost time of their departure, & auoidance out of this Realme, and all other His Maiesties Dominions at their perils, & not to returne againe vpon the seuere penalties of the Lawes now in force against them. His Maiesty hereby commanding all & singular Maiors, Sheriffes, Iustices of the peace, & Officers of Ports whither they shall repaire for their Shipping out, quietly to suffer thē in the mean time to depart. But if any of thē, or any others of that kind shal after that day be found within His Maiesties Dominiōs, that then the course of Iustice and the Lawes be taken & pursued against them with severity. Giuing warning hereby to all his Maiesties louing Subiects, that after the last day of September next ensuing they doe not receiue, harbour, entertaine, relieue, or conceale any of the said Iesuits, Seminary Priests, or other Popish Priests vpon the penalties which by the Law they shall incurre for so doing, And His Maiesties pleasure is, that after the last day of September next ensuing diligent search be from time to time made for the apprehension & bringing to Iustice of all Offenders in any the premisses.

God saue the King.
