A holy and heavenlie DIALOGVE between the LORD and his PEOPLE.
MY bowels my bowels, I am pained at my very heart,Ier. 4.19, 20. my heart maketh a noyse within me I cannot hold my peace, because my soule hath heard the sound of the Trumpet,Jer. 6.25. the alarme of war, destruction upon distruction is cryed, for the whol and is spoyled, and fear is on every side.
Heare O my people, and I will speake, Ps. 50.20 hast not thou procured this unto thy selfe, in that thou hast forsaken the Lord thy God, when he led thee in the away, for my people have committed two evills; Ier. 2. they have forsaken me the fountaine of living waters, ver. 17. and have hewed out unto themselves broken Cisternes, that will hold no water, ver. 13. know [Page 4]therefore and consider, ver. 19. that it is an evill thing and a bitter that thou hast forsaken the Lord thy God.
Ourhands wax feeble, anguish hath taken hold of us,Jer. 6.24 and pain as of a woman in travail, woe unto us, for we are spoiled.
When I spake ye did not hear, Jer. 4.13. but did evill before mine eyes, Esay. 65.12. and did choose that wherein I delighted not; ye have not obeyed my voice, why have ye done this?
O Lord,Judg. 22 Jos. 7.8. what shall we say when Israel turneth their backsbefore their enemies?
Israel hath sinned & they also have transgressed my Commandment which I commanded them, Jos. 7.11, 12. therfore they could not stand befere their enemies; 2 Chron. 12.5. ye have forsaken me and therefore have I left you in the hands of Shishar.
O the hope of Israel, the Saviour thereof in the time of trouble,Ier. 14.8. why shouldest thou be as a stranger in the Land, and as a wayfaring man that turneth aside to tarrie for a night?
Why transgresse ye the Commandements of the Lord; that ye connot prosper? Because yet have forsaken the Lord, 2 Chron. 24.20. Esa. 21.4. he also hath forsaken you
Mine heart faileth, fearfulness troubleth me, we have sinned, doe thou unto us whatsoever seemeth good unto thee,Iudg. 10.15. onely wee pray thee deliver us this day.
Fear not, ye have indeed done all this wickednesse, 1 Sam. 12.20. yet turn not aside from following the Lord, only acknowledge your iniquity that ye have [Page 5]transgressed against the Lord, Ier. 3.13. Hos. 14.2 take with you words and turn to the Lord, say unto him, take away our iniquity, and receive us graciously, and call upon me in the day of trouble, Ps. 50.15 so will I deliver thee, and thou shalt glorifie me.
O Lord God of Hosts, God of Israel,Es. 37.16. that dwellest betweene the Cherubims, thou art the God, even thou alone of all the Kingdoms of the earth, thou hast made heaven and erath,2 Chron. 20.6. and rulest over all the Kingdoms of the heathen, and in thy hands there is power and might; so that none is able to withstand thee, thou art great in counsell and mighty in work,Ier. 32.19 for thine eyes are open to the wayes of all the sons of men, to give to every man according to his wayes, nah. 1.7. and according to the fruit of his doings: Wee have dealt very corruptly against thee, and have not kept thy commandements;Dan. 9.8. O Lord to us belongeth confusion of face, because we have sinned against thee. We acknowledge, O Lord, our wickednesse,Ier. 14.20. and that thou art just in all that is come upon us,neh. 9.33. for thou hast done right, but wee have done wickedly,Ezra 9.6. for our iniquities are increased over our heads, and our trespasse is grown up to heaven,Dan. 9.14 Ps. 60.3. therefore hath the Lord watched upon the evill, and brought it upon us, thou hast shewed thy people hard things, thou hast made us to drinke the wine of astonishment, thou hast cast us off,Ps. 44.9. and put us to [Page 6]shame, and goest not forth with our Armies, thou hast made us to turne our backs upon our adversaries, ver. 10. and they that hate us spoile for themselves,Ps. 80.6. thou hast made us a strife unto our neighbours, and our enemies laugh at us among themselves,Esay. 64.7 thou hast hid thy face from us, and hast consumed us, because of our iniquities, yet compassion is in our God,Dan. 9.9. Mar 9.22 although we have sinned against him, O have compassion upon us, & helpe us, for the Lords sake, remember not against us our former iniquities, let thy tender mercie speedily prevent us,Dan. 9.17 for we are brought very low, because the enemy hath prevailed; O Lord,Psal. 79.8 though our iniquities testifie against us,Lam. 1.16 doe it for thy name sake. Remember this, that the enemie hath reproached thee, O Lord,Ier. 14.7. Ps. 74.18.79.10. and that the foolish people have blasphemed thy name, wherefore should the heathen say, where is now their God? They have set their mouthes against heaven,73.6. they prate and speake fiercely, all the workers of iniquity vaunt themselves;94.4. behold, they brag in their talke,59.7. and swords are in their lips: They have said, let us take for our possession the habitation of God,83.12. they have consulted together,83.5 and have made a league against thee, they incourage themselves in an evill matter,64.5. they have said in their hearts, let us destroy them together, have mercie upon us,123.9. O Lord, for we are [Page 7]exceedingly filled with contempt. O Lord what shall we say,Ios. 7.8; 9. when Israel turneth their backs before their enemies, and what wilt thou doe unto thy great name. O make thy name known to the adversaries, that men may know that thou who art called Jehovah, art most high over all the earth.Esay 64.2. Awake why sleepest thou?Ps. 144.23.26. O Lord arise for our helpe, and redeeme us for thy mercie sake; look down from heaven and behold from the habitation of thy holinesse, and of thy glory, where is thy zeale and thy strength,Esay 63.25 the sounding of thy bowels, and thy mercies towards us? Are they restrained? doe not abhor us for, thy name sake? Doe not disgrace the throne of thy glorie?Ier. 14.23. bow the heavens O Lord, and come down. O Lord,Ps. 144.5 Ps. 94.3 make no tarrying, how long shall the wicked, how long shall the wicked triumph? O our God, wilt thou not judge them, for there is no strength in us to stand against this great multitude? neither doe we know what to doe, but our eyes are towards thee? it is nothing with thee to helpe with many or with no power.2 Chron. 20.12. Helpe us O God of our salvation, for we rest on thee,2 Chron. 14.11. and in thy name are we come out against this great multitude. O Lord, thou art our God, let not man prevail against thee,Ps. 45.3. gird thy sword upon thy thigh, O most mighty, thou hast a mighty arme, strong is thy right hand,Ps. 89.13 high [Page 8]is thy right hand, shew thy marveilous loving kindnesse.Ps, 17.7. O thou that savest by thy right hand, them that put their trust in thee, from those that rise up against them, thou hast given a banner to them that feare thee,Ps. 60.4 that it may be displayed because of thy truth,Ps. 44.4. thou art our King O God, command deliverance for Jacob.
Feare not O Jacob my servant, Esay 44.2 and thou Jerusalem whom I have chosen, vengeance & recompence are mine, Deut. 32.35.36. their foot shall slide in due time, for the day of their destruction is at hand, and the things that shall come upon them make hast, for the Lord shall judge his people, and repent towards his servants, when he seeth that their power is gone, and none shut up in hold nor left abroad, I say 34.8 for it is the day of the Lords vengeance, and the yeer of recompences for the controversies of Sion.
This day is a day of tribulation,2 Kings 19.3. rebuke and blasphemie, for the children are come to the birth, and there is no strength to bring forth, like as a woman with child, that draweth neer to her deliverance is in pain and cryeth out in her pangs,Esay 26.17.18. so have we been in thy sight O Lord, we have conceived, we have been in pain, we have, as it were, brought forth winde, we have not wrought any deliverance in the earth.
Shall I bring to the birth,Esay 66.9.and not cause to bring forth, saith the Lord? now will I arise [Page 9]saith the Lord, now will I be exalted, Esay 33.10. now will I lift up my selfe, therefore feare not O my servant Jacob saith the Lord, neither be afraid O Israel, for loe I will deliver thee, Ier. 30.10 for I know the thoughts that I think towards you saith the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evill, Ier. 29.11. to give you an expected end.
We looked for peace but no good came,Ier. 8.15. and for a time of health, and behold trouble: Alas, for that day is great,Ier. 30.7. so that none is like it, it is even the time of Jacobs troubles.Ier. 4. last
Rememler ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old, Esay 43.18. the Lord hath appeared of old, for he said, surely they are my people, children that will not lie, Ier. 31.3. so he was their saviour, in all their afflictions he was afflicted, and the Angel of his presence saved them, Esay 63.8.9.10. in his love and in his pittie he redeemed them, and he bare them and carried them all the dayes of old, but they rebelled and vexed his holy spirit, therefore he was turned to be their enemy, and fought against them, how should one have chased a thousand, and two put ten thousand to flight, Deut. 32.30. except their rock had sold them, and the Lord had shut them up. O that my people had harkned unto me, and Israel had walked in my wayes, Ps. 81.13.14. I should soon have subdued their enemies, and turned my hand against their adversaries: But the Lord will not forsake for ever, but though he send affliction, Lam. 3.21.22.23. yet will he have compassion according to the multitude [Page 10]of his mercies, for he doth not punish wilingly nor afflict the children of men.
O Lord save thy people,Ier. 31.7. the remnant of Israel, let not the wicked have his desire,Ps. 104.8. O Lord performe not his wicked thought, lest he grow proud.
I was wrath with my people,Esay 47.6I said I would scatter them abroad, I would make their remembrance to cease from among men, Deut. 32.26, 27. save that I freared the fury of the enemy, lest their adversaries should waxe proud, and least they should say, our high hand, Esay 23.1. and not the Lord, hath done all this. But now thus saith the Lord that created thee O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, fear not, for I have redeemed thee, Esay 35.4 I have called thee by thy name, thou art mine, say unto them that are of a fearfull heart, fear not, behold your God will come with vengeance, even God with a recompence he will come and save you.
Spare thy people O Lord and give not thine inheritance to reproach,Ioel 2.17 that the heathen should rule over them, wherefore should they say among the people, where is their God? How long Lord,Reu. 6.10.22.20 how long, holy & true, & he which testifieth these things saith surely I come quickly, and shall not God avenge his elect which cry day and night unto him,Luke. 18 7, 8. I tell you he will avenge them quickly.
Feare thou not O my servant Jacob,Ier. 46.27. Esay 23.9and be not dismayed O Israel, the Lord of Hosts hath [Page 11]purposed to staine the pride of all glory, then will the Lord be jealous for this, and pittie his people. Ioel 2.18 I am the Lord this is my name, and my glory will I not give to another, Esay 42.8 neither my praise to graven Images. And I am very sore displeased with the Heathen that are at ease, for I was but a little displeased, and they helped forward the affliction, Zech. 1.15. Esay 63.4 therefore thus saith the Lord, I will return to Jerusalem with tender mercies, for the day of vengeance is in my heart, and the yeere of my redeemed is come, therefore thus saith the Lord God of Hosts, O my people that dwellest in Sion, Esay 10.24. bee not afraid of the Assyrian.
All our enemies have opened their mouthes against us,Lam. 3.46 5 17. for this my heart is faint, for these things our eyes wax dim.
I have heard the reproach of Moab, Zeph. 2.8 and the revilings of the children of Ammon, whereby they have reproached my people, therefore I will tread down the people in my wrath, & make them drunke in mine indignation, Esay. 63.6 and will bring down their strength to the earth, nah. 1.2 the Lord will take vengeance or his adversaries, and he reserveth wrath for his enemies.
How shall this be,Luke 1.34 seeing counsell and strength are for war, but where shall wisdome be found,2 Kings 18 20. Iob 28.12 surely there is none that sheweth, surely there is none that declareth, my brethren have dealt deceitfully as a brook,Iohn 6.15 2 Sam. 3.39. and as the streame of a brook they passe away, and I am this day weak.
I will give you a mouth and wisdome which all your adversaries shall not bee able to gain-say norresist,Luke 21.15. Ps. 29.11& the Lord shall give strength unto his people, for thus saith the Lord God the holy one of Israel, Esay 30.15. in returning and rest shall ye be saved, in quietnesse and confidence shall be your strength, Esay 31.5,6. so shall the Lord of Hosts come downe to fight for mount Sion and for the hill thereof, as birds flying so shall the Lord of Hosts defend Jerusalem, defending also he shall deliver it, and passing over he will preserve it. Esay 36.33. ver. 35 Therefore thus saith the Lord concerning the King of Assyria, he shall not come into this City, nor shoot an arrow there, nor come before it with sheilds, nor cast a bank against it, for I will defend this City to save it, for mine own sake and for my servant Davids sake, I the Lord doe keep it lest any hurt it, I will keep it night and day, Ier. 26.28 fear thou not for I am with thee.
O my Lord,Iudg. 6.13 if the Lord be with us, why then is all this befallen us, are not all these evills come upon us,Deut. 31.17 Esay 64.8. because our God is not amongst us?
In a little wrath I hid my face from thee for a moment, but with everlasting kindnesse will I have mercie on thee, saith the Lord thy redeemer, God is not as man that he should lie, numb. 23.19 nor as the sonne of man that he should repent, hath he said, and shall he not doe it? hath he spoken and shall he not accomplish it? if ye will not beleeve, surely ye shall not be established.
Lord I beleeve,Mark 9.24 helpe mine unbelief.
You approach this day unto battail against your enemies, let not your hearts faint, Deu. 20.3 fear not, and doe not tremble, neither be ye terrified because of them, Deut. 3.22 for the Lord your God he shall fight for you, so will I save you and ye shall be a blessing, fear not, but let your hands be strong. Zech. 8.15
Blessed is he that hath the God of Jacob for his helpe,Ps. 146.5 he is the rock, his work is perfect, for all his wayes are judgement,Deut. 32.4 a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he. Wherefore sirs,Acts 27.25. be of good courage, for I beleeve God, that it shall be so as he hath told me.
Goe thy way, and as thou hast beleeved, Mat 8.13 2 Kings 10.10. so be it done unto thee, there shall fall upon the earth nothing of the word of the Lord, for as the rain cometh down and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, so shall my word be that goeth out of my mouth, Esay 55.10.11. it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, for there is no restraint to the Lord, 1 Sam. 16.6. Esay 41.14. to save by many or by few, fear not thou worme Jacob, and ye men of Israel, I will helpe thee, saith the Lord.
Therefore will I wait upon the Lord that hath hid his face from the house of Jacob,Esay 8.17. and will wait for him, what time I am afraid I will trust on thee,Ps. 59.3. O my soul, [Page 14]thou hast said the Lord is my light and my salvation,Ps. 16.2. whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life, of whom shall I be afraid:Ps. 27.1.3 though an host should encamp against me, mine heart shall not feare, though war should rise against me, in this will I be confident,Ps. 3.6. I will not be afraid of ten thousand of people, that have set themselves against me round about, in God have I put my trust,Ps. 56.4. I will not fear what flesh can doe to me: the Lord is my rock and my fortresse, my deliverer,Ps. 18.2 my God, my strength, in him will I trust, my buckler, and the horne of my salvation, and my high tower.
Trust in him at all times,Ps. 62.8. ye people powre out your hearts before him, God is a refuge for us; beleeve in the Lord your God, so shall ye be established;2 Chron. 20.20. beleeve his Prophets, so shall ye prosper; when the enemy shall come in like a flood;Esay 59.19. the Spirit of the Lord shall lift up a Standard against him. Blessed is he that hath the God of Jacob for his helpe, blessed be the name of God for ever and ever,Ps. 146.6 for wisdome and might are his; when he giveth quietnesse,Can. 2.20. who then can make trouble, and when he hideth his face, who then can behold him? whither it be done against a nation,Iob 34.29 or against a man, onely hee maketh wars to cease unto the ends of the earth,Ps. 46.9. he breaketh the bow, and cutteth the speare in sunder, he burneth the chariot in [Page 15]the fire, what shall wee then say to these things?Rom. 8.31 If God be for us who can be against us? Therefore will I look unto the Lord.Mica 7.7 I will wait for the God of my salvation, my God will hear me.
O Israel trust thou in the Lord, he is their helpe and their sheild. Amen.Ps. 115.9.
