Two ORDINANCES OF THE LORDS and COMMONS Assembled in PARLIAMENT. For the reliefe and maintenance of maimed Souldiers and Marriners, and the Widdowes and Orphants of such as have dyed in the service of the Parliament during these late warres.

ORdered by the Lords Assembled in Parliament, That these two Ordinances for the reliefe of maimed Souldiers be forthwith printed and published.

WHereas by a former Ordi­nance, bearing date the 28. day of May now last pas­sed, entituled, An Ordi­nance for reliefe of maimed Souldiers, &c. It is Or­dained, That such further summe of money shall be assessed as by the Justices of Peace in the next Quarter Sessi­ons, after the passing the said Ordinance, or the major part of them shall be adjudged meet to be assessed upon every Parish, or Chappelry that hath distinct Parochiall Offi­cers, so as the said additionall sum excee­deth not the sum of two shillings six pence, nor be under the sum of three-pence each [Page 2] weeke, for each such Parish or Chappelry; for as much as the service aforesaid could not be performed as was desired, for want of time sufficient allowed by this Ordinance, in regard the Authority given to the Justices to execute the same is onely at the next Quarter Sessions after the passing the Ordi­nance. It is therefore Ordered and Ordai­ned by the Lords and Commons assembled in Parliament, That the Justices of Peace within the Kingdome of England, and Do­minion of Wales, shall be hereby authorized to proceed, and shall, or may at any time hereafter at any Sessions of the Peace; which shall or may at any time hereafter be holden within their severall divisions, proceed for the putting the former Ordinance in execu­tion to all intents and purposes, as they might have done by vertue of the said Or­dinance aforesaid, at the next Quarter Ses­sions after the passing the same.

An Ordinance for reliefe of maimed Souldiers and Marriners, and the Wid­dows and Orphants of such as have died in the service of the Parliament during these late warres.

FOr the reliefe and maintenance of such Souldiers as have bin mai­med, and disabled in the service of the Parliament during these late warres, that is to say, since the warres began; and for the re­liefe of the Widowes and Or­phants of such as have been slaine or dead in the said service, Be it ordained by the Lords and Commons in this present Parliament as­sembled, that from and after the feast of Easter last part before the date hereof, every Parish within this Realme of England and Dominion of Wales shall be charged weekly to the payment of such sum of mo­ney as formerly they have been rated as by vertue of a Statute of the 43d yeere of Queen Elizabeth, [Page 4] Cap. tertio, concerning the reliefe of Souldiers and Marriners, for and to such end and purpose; And likewise such further summe of money over and besides the same, as by the Justices of the Peace in their next Quarter Sessions after the passing of this Or­dinance, or the major part of them shall be adjudged meete to be assessed upon every Parish or Chap­pelry that hath distinct parochiall Officers; so as the said additionall summe exceedeth not the summe of two shillings and six pence, nor be under the summe of three pence each weeke, for each such Parish or Chappelry, the same to be leavied in man­ner and forme by such persons, and under such pe­nalties, as by the said Statute of Queen Elizabeth is declared; And to be paid to the Treasurers for the maimed Souldiers appointed by the Justices of the peace of the County or Liberty by vertue of this Or­dinance, and the Statute of Queen Elizabeth afore­said; which said Treasurers shall be ordered in such manner, and under such penalties as by the said Sta­tute is further declared. And be it ordained that every Souldier or Marriner, maimed or disabled in body for worke, in the service of the Parliament during these late warres, shall forthwith repaire to the place where he was last setled when he tooke up Armes, with a certificate of his service, and hurt received, under the hand of his Captaine or other Commissionary Of­ficer, and shall also repaire unto the two next Justi­ces of the peace for the County where such his set­ling was; And the said two Justices upon examination of the truth of such Certificate (which the said two Justices are hereby enabled to take upon oath of the [Page 5] party, and of such witnesses as he shall produce) shall by warrant unto the Treasurer assigne him reliefe un­till the next Quarter-sessions to be holden for that County or Liberty, At which time a yearly Pension shall be by the said Justices or major part of them granted in manner and forme, and with power of re­vocation or alteration, as by the said Statute is further declared and directed; And in case that the Captaine or officer appointed to make such Certificate be dead, the said two Justices shall have power upon request of them made in behalfe of the party maymed by persons of credit to give such reliefe as in case of exa­mination aforesaid. And as touching Widdowes and Orphans of such as have died, or have been slaine in the service of the Parliament; It is hereby ordained, that over and besides such reliefe as they shall gaine by their worke and labour, and shall be allowed them by the charity and benevolence of the Parish, Town, or Hamblet where they are setled (who are hereby required to have them in speciall regard) the Trea­surers of the maimed Souldiers for such County shall allow such further reliefe from time to time as shall be judged meet by the two next Justices of the peace of such County; The said reliefe shall be paid out of the surplusage of such stock of maintenance as shall remaine in the hands of the said Treasurers after such Pensions granted, and payment of them made, and of which surplusage and allowance made unto such Widdowes and Orphants, the said Treasurers shall give account from time to time, and the same distri­bute in such manner as by the Justices shall be dire­cted, and according to the Statute aforesaid.

Be it further Ordained, that the Justices of the Peace in every County or Liberty, or any two of them, shall forthwith call all such Treasurers, High-Constables, Petty-Constables, or other persons (who have formerly beene intrusted with the receipt, col­lecting, or disposing of any summe of money charged upon any Parish by vertue of the Statute aforesaid, and whereof no account hath beene given; and like­wise the Executors and Administrators of such per­sons) unto account concerning such leavies, and col­lections made, and such money as they shall finde re­maining in the custody of such persons, to order forth­with to be paid unto the Treasurer appointed by ver­tue of the said Statute, or to be appointed by vertue of this Ordinance, at the next quarter Sessions to be holden for the Country or Liberty, under such pe­nalties as by the said Statute is set forth; which said Treasurer to be appointed by vertue of this Ordi­nance shall continue by vertue hereof untill the Easter Sessions following.
