APPENDIX Ad Catalogum Plantarum Circa CANTABRIGIAM nascentium: Continens ADDENDA Et EMENDANDA.

CANTABRIGIAE. Excudebat Joan. Field, celeberrimae Academiae Typographus.

Impensis Gulielmi Morden, Bibliopolae. Ann. Dom. 1663.

Lectori S.

EX quo Catalogum plantarum circa Cantabrigiam nascentium in lucem emisi, alias aliquam multas stirpes in agris oppido ei vicinis sponte provenientes animadverti; quas quoniam jam dilectissimae nutrici almae Academiae non sponte supremum vale dixerim, & in transmarinas regiones mox discessurus sum, in unum fasciculum collectas Phytologiae studiosis seorsim exhibendas censui. Seorsim inquam, nam quoad Cantabrigiae vixi, cùm nova eis quotannis accessio fieret, penes me diu servâsse, nec antea publici juris fecisse decreveram, quàm Catalogum generalem, quem meditabar, plantarum omnium quae in Anglia & insulis adjacentibus sponte oriuntur penitus absolvere & unà evulgare potuissem. Huic scilicet studio sedulus incubui, & plerasque omnes etiam remotissimas hujus regni provincias in hunc praecipuè finem obivi & perlustravi. Verùm quoniam opus illud ut debitam perfectionem acquirat, plurium adhuc annorum observationibus indiget, plurimaeque subinde emergunt difficultates, [Page]quibus omnibus superandis & expediendis nescio an totum quod superest vitae sufficiat, mutatâ sententiâ Catalogum ab Appendice separandum judicavi, & nec illius editionem praecipitandam, nec hujus suspendendam. Atque haec breviter de Addendis. Jam quoniam errata etiam nonnulla in Catalogo Cantabrigiensium plantarum deprehendi, quamvìs nec adeò gravia sint quin ea sine insigni famae detrimento supprimere & dissimulare potuissem, nec adeò obvia & manifesta, ut à quovis facilè detegi mihique exprobrari possint, nè tamen pudor meus studiosae juventuti fraudi foret, impetravi à me ipse ea ingenuè aperire & veritati potiùs aliorúmque commodis quàm existimatiani propriae inservire.

Addenda.

  • ALcea vulgaris J. B. Dod. Ad. Lob. Clus. hist. vulgaris major C.B. vulgaris sive Malva verbenacea Park. Malva verbenacea Ger. Vervain mallow. In Kingston wood.
  • Alsine aquatica surrectior J.B. forté. Plantula Portulacae aquaticae affines. Small upright water Chickweed, called by some Blinkes. On the boggy grounds about Gamlingay. This is very frequent in many other places of England, in watery grounds, and bogs, especially where the ground is sandy.
  • Alsine hirsuta altera viscosa C. B. Spuria 4 Dod. The broader leaved Mouse-ear-Chickweed. Nimirum florem habet minorem, evanidum; folia breviora, latiora, pallidiora; caules magìs erectos quàm Alsine myosotis hirsuta Ad. Quinetiam tota planta [caules, folia flores] in siccioribus viscosa est. This flowers before the other.
  • Alsine fontana credita flosculorum foliolis non divisis. An Alsine fontana Ger? aquatica media C.B? Fountain-chickweed. Ramulos habet tenues, infirmos, humi procumbentes; folia pallidè virentia, acutiora quàm Alsine media; Flosculorum foliola non ut in illa ad unguem usque fissa, sed integra & in acutum desinentia. Found in many places but especially about Balsham. There is no reason why this should be called Fountain-chickweed: we never found it growing in the water. Floret circa initium Aprilis & deinceps.
  • Aparine semine laeviore. Cleavers or Goose-grass with smoother seed. Haec (quod sciam) nondum descripta est. Inter segetes passim.
  • Auricula leporis minima J.B An Bupleurum minimum Col. Park? An Bupleurum angustissimo folio C.B? The smallest Hares-car. By the way-side as you ride to S Neotes [Page]beyond Elles-ly. I found it since in a well in Carnarvan-shire in Wales, called Gods well, but always immersed in the water. I took it once to be the Fontalis minor lucens J. B. but he doth not [Page]mention the leaves of that to be so disposed all along the stalk as to make it appear triangular.
O
  • ORchis sive Testiculus Sphegodes hirsuto flore J. B. An Orchis fucum referens colore rubiginoso C. B? Quid sibi velint Gerardus & Parkinsonus nostrates in Orchidum historia non satìs perspicio: puto tamen Parkinsonum hanc intellegere per Orchidem suam Sphegodem alteram, sed eam perperam describit (alis sc. purpurascentibus, cùm hujus ex luteo virescant) Fortè Gerardo Testiculus vulpinus major Sphegodes. Q. R.
  • RAnunculus hirsutus arvensis flore minimo. Field Crowfoot with a small flower.
  • Ranunculus rectus foliis pallidioribus hirsutus J. B. apud quem plena habetur & accurata descriptio. Upright pale-leaved sweet Crowfoot. In locis humidis & lutosis, praecipuè ubi per hyemem aquae stagnârunt.

S
  • SCabiosa vulgaris flore pleno. Double flowered Scabious. V
  • VIrga aurea Ger. Matth. Dod. ut. aurea vulgaris Park. aurea vulgaris latifolia J. B. aurea IV. sive angustifolia minùs serrata C. B. Golden Rod. In some pastures about Gamlingay.

Emendanda, in quibus quaedam mutanda & supplenda.

A
  • ABrotanum campestre & Abrotanum inodorum] Si placet expungantur ambo. I beleeve neither of them is to be found on Newmarket heath, at least that part of it which is in Cambridge-shire.
  • Allium sylvestre] Huic adde Synon: Allium campestre junci-folium capitatum majus C. B.
  • Anagallis aquatica I, & Anagallis aquatica III C. B.] Et haec pariter expungantur. Ego sc. has differentias apud nos nunquam potui observare. D. Nid ex conjectura & praesumptione Catalogo inseruit, quoniam Botanici vulgò & praecipué Jo. Bauhinus passim & promiscuè quatuor varietates hîc recensitas crescere affirmat.
B
  • BLitum album minus] I now think the plant we found in Kingston wood to be the same with the common red Blite▪ and that it differed in colour by reason of the shadiness of the place where it grew.
  • Bursa pastoris minor] Haec planta non videtur specie differre à Nasturtio Alpino petraeo. Certè Jo. Bauhinus Nasturtium petraeum Tab. hujus synonymum facit. Verùm nihil temerè pronuncio.
C
  • Carduus nutans] An Carduus spinosissimus latifolius Sphaerocephalus vulgaris C. B? Intelligo jam hunc censeri Carduum moschatum Ger.
E
  • [Page]EChium alterum] Fateor me nondum percipere specificum aliquod discrimen inter Echium vulgare, & illud quod apud nos in muris passim provenit. Alii strictiùs examinent.
G
M
  • MOllugo montana sive Gallium] Haec duo synonima Rubia sylvatica altera Gesn.
Bauhinus descripsit sub titulo Rubiae angulosae asperae, quin & Botanici Londinenses Rubiam sylvestrem eam nominant. Mihi verisimile est sub utroque titulo eandem plantam describi. Dubitat [Page]scil. Jo. Bauhinus an Rubiae suae angulosae respondeat Mollugo Clus. necne. Jam vero Mollugo Glusis eadem est Mollugini primae Dod. Mollugini montanae Ger. Mollugini vulgatiori Park. Nam figura ubique eadem; atque tum figura tum descriptio huic plantae conveniunt: at Rubiae sylvestris apud Ger. & Park. descriptiunculae non item.
  • C. Bauhinus malè applicat Molluginem Clus. & Molluginem montanam Ger. Mollugini suae primae seu montanae ramosae latifoliae; cùm haec synonyma ad secundam spectant non minùs quàm Mollugo prima Dod.
O
  • ORiganum vulgare] The plant that grows in Bowyers close at Cherry-hinton is not this, but Clinopodium vulgare. We mistook it when it was young.
P
  • POlygalon Cortusi] Pro hoc substitue, Ferrum equinum Germanicum siliquis in summitate C. B. cujus synonyma quaere in Addendis.
R
  • RAnunculus hederaceus rivulorum, &c.] Plantae hujus flores albi sunt, non lutei prout conjectabamur; & in aquosis passim oritur: Proinde synonyma allegata ei non respondent, nisi fortè in transmarinis floris colore variet.
S
  • SAxifraga Anglica Occidentalium] loco Saxifragae Anglicae alsinefoliae Ger. emac. substitue Synanchica Lugd. p. 1125 Ger. emac. & adde synonyma Rubia cynanchica J. B. VI, sive cynanchica C. B.
  • Saxifraga graminea pusila] I finde upon comparing that this is the same plant described by Johnson upon Gerard under the name of Saxifraga Anglicana alsinefolia or Pearlwort.
T
  • [Page]TIthymalus helioscopius [...]
V
  • VIcia parva sive Cracca minor cum siliquis plurimis hirsutis d [...]leatur▪ Bis enim ponitur, superius sub Araco.
