LONDON: [...]ed for H. Bonwicke, at the Red Lyon in St. Paul's Church-yard, 1687.

THE PREFACE.

ALtho the Kings Majesty hath taken all the Care that ever any Prince did, that his Army should have suitable Assistance for the things of another life as well as this; so that there is [...]thing wanting to make the life of a Soldier in his Service, compleatly happy: yet the Chaplains assigned to each particular Regiment, cannot be attendant but on one part at one time, when some are upon De [...]chments, or Garrison'd at distance from the rest, as it happens here in England most [...]mmonly every Winter: And then, no doubt, there will be frequent occasion for such a private Manual as this, altho the Chaplain be no ways wanting on his part. And I believe it will be confessed by many, that they have long wish'd for such an help.

For tho there are many excellent Collections of Offices and Prayers extant, under the [...]mes of the most learned and pious Divines, yet all those which I have seen, are different from this in three respects.

[...]
[...]

First, In that they are not peculiarl [...] adapted as well to the Genius, as to the occasions of a Soldier, requiring either longer time to repeat, than can well be spared from the necessary duties of this profession, or being wanting in several particulars which are proper subjects of a Soldiers Prayers.

Secondly, They are swell'd with such devotions as can seldom be brought into the Military Sphere; such as are proper fo [...] Women for Children, and the like: nor can the Observance of all the Feasts and Fasts of the Church, be reasonably expected from a Soldier whilst he is upon Military duty.

Thirdly, They are not so plain and intelligible to every Capacity, nor each intire Office put so close together, without any interruption, or turning over leaves to and fro, which tho 'tis necessary in the usual methods, and serves to confine the loosness of a wandring mind; yet is not so Compendious for the Soldiers time, nor so Obvious to those who are not acquainted with rubrical directions.

Whereas our little Manual hath nothing in it which a Soldier can well omit, when he hath sufficient time; and yet if he hath but one minute to spare, he may here employ it; for the lesser Service is so order'd, consisting for the most part of short Collects, that if the Soldier is not assured before-hand of his time, yet he may break off almost when he [Page] will, without any undecent abruptness; th [...] it can never be excused where it may be avoided.

But the brevity of these Devotions are every where Conspicuous; for the Greater Service, with several proper Collects, is perform'd in a quarter of an hour; the lesser requires but a few minutes.

Yet here is not any thing wanting which is proper for a Soldiers private Devotions, at leastways, that could well be added by one who intends benefit to the professors of either Religion, as I ingenuously confess this little prayer-book is intended.

Nor is it a Contemptible design, that Soldiers of different Religions in one Barr [...]ck, may all of them joyn in the same prayus, and renew to God, as it were before witnesses, the protestation of their Loyalty to their King; and with a pious simplicity, learn to love and embrace one another in the reflection of the Kings love and indulgence [...] all his Subjects.

The Offices for an Eucharistical preparation, Sickness, Wounds, or approaching death, I have here omitted; because amongst other reasons, I think the presence of a Chaplain will better supply those defects, his Office calling him thereto in a most especial manner; for who knows not that the condition of mens particular Consciences, may [Page] in these cases be so various, that 'tis impossible the same prescription should serve for all?

I advise therefore, that when a Soldier is sore wounded, or sick, he sends by the same messenger for the Chaplain as well as the Physitian: yet notwithstanding, I have added one prayer, in case of Sickness, out of the Whole Duty of Man.

The plainness and the easiness of the method, cannot but recommend it to all, each Service being continued unto the end without any interruption, unless where a proper Collect is necessary, and that needs but little Clerkship to turn to: The proper Hymns require indeed the use of a Psalter; where one may be had they are soon found out, otherwise they may be omitted.

No Soldier will wonder, that the Expedition Hymn is in the Evening rather than Morning, it being intended only for a considerable March, when the Soldiers ha [...]e little spare time in the Morning, but take up their Quarters early at Night.

And now I must obviate an Objection which may be made, of my putting the greater Service in the plural number, when the Title bears, for the Private use of a Soldier.

It must be acknowledged, that most f [...]rms of Prayer, writ and published by particular men, without Synodical Authority, are [Page] designed for private use; it being no less, than Schism for private persons to prescribe publick forms of Worship; yet certainly those pious Authors did intend, that three or four might make use of such prayer [...]s together, without any offence to Ecclesiastical Authority.

But considering I write for Soldiers of [...]l ranks and degrees, as well private Centinels as Officers, we shall find many, t [...] being brought up more to Arms than letters, addicting themselves perhaps to that they now profess, from their very [...]outh, may always have had an invincible [...]ersion to Books; and it may without won [...]er be supposed, that there are many Gen [...]lemens Sons, who can't read distinctly their Mother Tongue; these I presume, will be [...]illing to joyn their Devotions with some letter letter'd Comrades.

Without wonder I say, that private Cen [...]tels should be so ignorant, when Licinius a [...]eat Captain, and afterwards Emperour; [...]etrannio, a great General in the time of Constans, Charles VIII. and divers great [...]arriours, not to speak of the Spartan Nation, [...] the general, were notoriously illiterate. Such an Ignorance the great Sforza hand [...]mely excused in himself, saying, He [...]d not learn'd to hold a Book and a Sword in the same hand; so then it may [Page] very well happen, that but one person in a Barrock or Chamber, may be capable of reading these prayers; whose Charity, I hope, will prompt him to invite his fellow-Soldiers to partake of his talent.

But suppose there were no such occasion; is it any Solecism in Divinity, for a single person in his private Devotions, to make prayers and intercessions for others as well as himself? 'Twas concisely said by St. Ambrose, Haex lib. 1. He that prays for himself, only prays alone for himself; meaning, others will not pray for him, or God will not hear the prayers of others for him: And St. Ep. 7. juxta Rigalt. & de orat. Dom. Cyprian notes, that our Saviour when he taught us to say Our Father, and not my Father; our daily bread, and not my daily bread; meant, that every individual person should pray for others as well as himself: And since that short prayer of Gods composing speaks always in the plural number, I think further Apology needless. But notwithstanding all this, if the Reader will be selfish, which I think Soldiers seldom are, he may, if he please, change [we] into [I] and [us] into [me.] Whilst he that's better humour'd will, I hope, thank me for providing with so particular a Care, for his gratitude to his Prince; which seems in [Page] these prayers, to make up a great part of the Soldiers Devotion; and he who duly considers, will find, there is great reason for it; not only as in his character he is our common Lord and Father, and in his person the light of our Eyes, and the desire of our hearts, full of grace and clemency, for which all his Subjects owe him a great share in their prayers; but as he is more peculiarly a Royal Patron and Benefactor to his Soldiers, and all other his Servants.

Ʋpon which consideration, besides those in common to all the King's Subjects, the Soldier hath great reason to be importunate in his prayers for the King his Master, and the Royal Family; it being a repeating of his thanks for the benefits enjoy'd under so good a Prince; which he ought to do as willingly and as heartily, as ever he said Grace before or after meat.

It remains now, that I give a few directions to those who please to make use of this Manual:

First, That they make use of it as frequently as the King's Service will admit them, and when they have sufficient opportunity, laying up in store, as it were, for times of greater avocation.

And indeed if we duly consider, a frequency in prayer may more reasonably be expected from Soldiers, than from any other sort of men, for three reasons:

[Page]1. There are few other men who h [...] so much leisure and spare-time for t [...] greatest part of the year as Soldiers have this is a large Talent, and we read th [...] much is expected from them to whom mu [...] is given.

2. The Soldier being so long un-imployed is subject more to divers sorts of tempt [...] tions; there is great need therefore that [...] should so much the oftner implore the preventing Grace of God to guard and strengthen him against his three worst Enemies▪ the World, the Flesh, and the Devil.

3. Since the Soldier, amongst all other men, ought to place the least hopes in▪ Death-bed Repentance, seeing he stands always in expectation, as it were, of a q [...]i [...] passage to another life, he ought always t [...] be prepared with a good Conscience as well as Courage; and having made his peac [...] with God in frequent Devotions, he m [...] have nothing to do at such a time when [...] shall not be sit to do any thing seriously.

Secondly, I would have the Soldier t [...] pray always in as devout and solemn [...] manner as is possible, that inward Zeal and outward Worship may be as closely unite [...] as Soul and Body.

Thirdly, I would put him in mind, th [...] a frequent use of this, or any other Book of Devotions, will not be a sufficient performance [Page] for the purposes of Eternity, without a constant habit of Christian Virtue and manly Piety.

Fourthly, I do earnestly entreat and hum [...]ly adjure him, that he never absents himself from public Prayers, under pretence of making use of these in private; but if he cannot attend on both public and private, let him rather neglect his private than public Devotions.

Fifthly, As I think it highly requisite, [...]hat before an engagement with the Enemy, [...] any other great danger, the Soldier should make some religious Vows to God, so I would have him take care,

First, That his Vows be prudent, plain, and positive; not such a rash and dubious one as Jephthe made, but such as he [...]ay be as willing to perform as promise, and which may lye wholly within his power of performing.

Secondly, To let his first Vow be a gene [...]al amendment of Life, and a particular a [...]andoning, as well of his bosom and dar [...]ing Sins, as of the deepest rooted and [...]ost stubborn, this being the most acceptable Vow which any man can make to God.

Thirdly, When he hath escaped the danger, let him lay to heart these words of the Preacher: When thou vowest a Vow [...]nto God, defer not to pay it; for he [Page] hath no pleasure in [...]ools: pay that which thou hast vowed; for better it is that thou shouldst not vow, than that thou shouldst vow and not pay, Eccles. 5. 4, 5.

And now I pray God that this little grain of mustard-seed, tho it be less than the least of all that hath been yet sown, may fall on good ground, and bring forth a vast increase, to the Glory of his most holy Name: If it succeeds so, I shall have my greatest end, which is out of a simple and sincere mind, to labour apace in my proper Vocation, and employ the Talent which God hath lent me for the good of Holy Catholic Church, to whose Sacred Judgment, in most humble wise, I submit all that is herein contained.

[Before Kneeling.]

When the wicked Man turneth away from his wickedness, and doth that which is lawful and right, he shall save his S [...]l alive, Ezek. 18. 27.

To this end, let us make Confession of our Sins, with a pure heart and humble voice, before the Throne of the Heavenly Grace, saying:

[Kneeling down devoutly.]

ALmighty and most merciful Father: We have erred and strayed from thy ways like lost Sheep: we have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts; we have offended against thy holy Laws: We have left undone those things which we ought to have done; And we have done those things which we ought not to have done: And there is no health in us: But thou O Lord, have mercy upon us miserable Offenders; Spare thou them O God, which confess their faults: Restore thou them that are penitent: According to thy promises declared unto Mankind in Christ Jesu our Lord: And grant, O most merciful Father for his sake; That we may hereafter live a Godly, Righteous, and Sober Life: To the Glory of thy holy Name. Amen.

OUr Father which art in Heaven; Hallowed be thy Name: Thy Kingdom come: Thy Will be done in Earth as it is in Heaven: Give us this day our daily Bread; And forgive us our Trespasses as we forgive them that Trespass against us; And lead us not into Temptation, but deliver us from Evil. For thine is the Kingdom, the Power, and the Glory, for ever and ever, Amen.

O Lord open thou our Lips.

And our mouth shall shew forth thy praise.

O God make speed to save us.

O Lord make haste to help us.

[Standing up.]

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.

Benedictus. S. Lu. 1. 68.

BLessed be the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his People.

And hath raised up a mighty Salvation for us, in the House of his Servant David.

As he spake by the Mouth of his [Page 4] holy Prophets; which have been since the World began.

That we should be saved from our Enemies: and from the hands of all that hate us.

To perform the mercy promised to our Fore-fathers; and to remember his holy Covenant.

To perform the Oath which he sware to our Fore-father Abraham: that he would give us.

That we being delivered out of the Hands of our Enemies, might serve him without fear.

In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our Life.

And thou Child shalt be called the Prophet of the highest; for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways.

To give knowledge of Salvation unto his people, for the remission of their Sins.

Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the day spring from on high hath visited us.

To give light to them that sit in darkness, and in the shadow of Death; and to guide our Feet into the way of peace.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, World without end, Amen.

The Lesson. Rom. 13.

LEt every Soul be subject to the higher Powers. Do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same; for he is the Minister of God to thee for good: But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid, for he beareth not the Sword in vain; for he is the Minister of God, a Revenger to execute Wrath upon him that doth evil; wherefore ye must needs be subject not only for Wrath, but for Conscience sake: For this cause pay you Tribute also, for they are God's Ministers attending continually upon this very thing. Render therefore to all their dues, Tribute to whom Tribute is due, Custom to whom Custom, Fear to whom Fear, Honour to whom Honour.

Let us make Confession of our Faith.

I Believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of Heaven and Earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried, he descended into Hell, the third day he rose again from the Dead; He ascended into Heaven, and sitteth on [Page 9] the right hand of God the Father Almighty, from thence he shall come to judge the Quick and the Dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost, the Holy Catholick Church, the Communion of Saints, the forgiveness of Sins, the Resurrection of the Body, and the Life everlasting, Amen.

[Let us pray]
Lord have mercy upon us.
Christ have mercy upon us.
Lord have mercy upon us.

OUr Father which art in Heaven; Hallowed be thy Name: Thy Kingdom come; Thy Will be done in Earth as it is in Heaven; Give us this day our daily Bread; And forgive us our Trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass against us; And lead us not into Temptation, but deliver us from evil, Amen.

O Lord shew thy Mercy upon us.
And grant us thy Salvation.
O Lord save the King.
And mercifully hear us when we call upon thee.
Endue thy Ministers with Righteousness.
And make thy chosen people joyful.
O Lord save thy People.
Because there is none other fighteth for us, but only thou, O God.
O God make clean our Hearts within us.
And take not thy Holy Spirit from us.

PRevent us, O Lord, in all our Doings, with thy most gracious Favour, and further us with thy continual hel [...] that in all our Works, begun, continued, and ended in thee, we may glorifie thy holy Name; and finally by th [...] Mercy obtain everlasting Life, through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

Or else one or more of the special Colle [...] as there shall be occasion.

ALmighty God, in knowledge o [...] whom standeth our Eternal Life, whose Service is perfect freedom; defend us thy humble Servants in all Assaults of our Enemies, that we, surely trusting in thy defence, may not fear the power of any Adversaries, through the might of Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

O Lord our Heavenly Father, Almighty and everlasting God, who hast safely brought us to the beginning of th [...] day, defend us in the same with th [...] mighty power, and grant that this d [...] we fall into no Sin, neither run in [...] [Page 11] any kind of danger; but that all our Doings may be ordered by thy Governance, to do always that is righteous in thy sight, through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

O Lord our Heavenly Father, high and mighty, King of Kings, Lord of Lords, the only Ruler of Princes, who dost from thy Throne behold all the Dwellers upon Earth; most heartily we beseech thee with thy Favour to behold our most Gracious Soveraign Lord King JAMES, and so replenish him with the Grace of thy Holy Spirit, that he may alway incline to thy Will, and walk in thy Way: Endue him plenteously with Heavenly Gifts; grant him in Health and Wealth long to live; strengthen him that he may vanquish and overcome all his Enemies; and finally, after this Life, he may attain everlasting Joy and Felicity, through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

A Prayer used daily by the Christian Soldiers under Constantine the Great.

O Lord, we acknowledge Euseb. in vit. Const. lib. 4. thee to be the only God, the King of all Nations, [Page 12] we implore thee to be our Helper; by thee our Victories are obtained, by thee our Enemies are subdued; thou hast filled our Minds with remembrance of thy former Mercies, and with the hope and expectation of thy future Bounty: Behold us now thy humble Supplicants, beseeching thee for our Soveraign Prince's long Life and perpetual Victories, through Christ our Lord, Amen.

ALmighty God, the Fountain of all Goodness, we humbly beseech thee to bless our Gracious Queen Mary, Katherine the Queen Dowager, their Royal Highnesses Mary Princess of Orange, and the Princess Ann of Denmark, and all the Royal Family; endue them with thy Holy Spirit, enrich them with thy Heavenly Grace, prosper them with all Happiness, and bring them to thine Everlasting Kingdom, through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

ALmighty and everlasting God, who hast taught us to make Prayers and Supplications, and to give Thanks for Kings, and all that are in Authority under them; we beseech thee to save and defend thy Servant James our King, and [Page 13] all the Royal Family. Give Grace, O Heavenly Father, unto his whole Council, and to all his Officers; more particularly those under whose Command we are placed, that they may with Prudence, lategrity and Courage, discharge duly the several Trusts reposed in them, to the Safety and Glory of our King and his Kingdom: And for us, and for all our fellow-Soldiers, we humbly beseech thee to endue us with such Virtues, as may adorn the Profession of Christian Warriours; more particularly, with Loyalty, Fortitude, and Temperance, and with upright, contented, and charitable Spirits. We pray thee likewise for all Bishops and Curates, and for all Estates of Men in thy Holy Catholick Church, that every Member of the same in his Vocation and Ministry, may truly and diligently serve thee. And we most humbly beseech thee, to comfort and support all thy People in their several necessities and exigencies; and we also bless thy Holy Name, for all those triumphant Souls who have fought a good Fight, and finished their Course; beseeching thee to give us Grace so to follow their good Examples, that with them we may be partakers of thy Heavenly Kingdom. Grant this, O Father, for Jesus Christ [Page 14] his sake, our only Mediator and Advocate, Amen.

O Almighty Lord and everlasting God, vouchsafe, we beseech thee, to direct, sanctifie, and govern both our Hearts and Bodies in the ways of thy Laws, and in the Works of thy Commandments; that through thy most mighty Protection, both here, and ever, we may be preserved in Body and Soul, through our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, Amen.

The Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the Love of God, and the Fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore, Amen.

TAke heed, watch and pray: for ye know not when the time is. For the Son of Man is as one taking a far journey, who left his house, and gave Authority to his Servants, and to every man his work, and commanded the Porter to watch. Watch ye therefore; for ye know not when the master of the house will come, at even, or at midnight, or at Cock-crowing, or in the morning: lest if he come suddainly, he find you [Page 20] sleeping. And what I say unto you, I say unto all, Watch.

O Lord save thy people.
Because there is none other that fighteth for us, but only thou, O God.
O God make clean our Hearts within us
And take not thy holy Spirit from us.

ASsist us mercifully, O Lord, in these our Supplications and Prayers, and dispose the way of thy Servants, towards the attainment of everlasting Salvation; that among all the changes and chances of this mortal Life, we may ever be defended by thy most gracious and ready help, through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

Or instead of this, one or more of the special Collects, as there shall be occasion.

O God, from whom all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works [Page 23] do proceed, give unto thy servants that [...]ace which the world cannot give, that [...]h our hearts may be set to obey thy Commandments; and also that by thee [...]e being defended from the fear of our Enemies, may pass our time in rest and quietness; through the merits of Jesus Christ our Saviour, Amen.

ALmighty and everliving God, who hast taught us to make Prayers and Supplications, and to give thanks for Kings, and all that are in Authority under them; we beseech thee to save and [Page 25] defend thy Servant James our King, and all the Royal Family. Give Grace, O Heavenly Father, unto his whole Council, and to all his Officers, more particularly those under whom we are placed, that they may with Prudence, Integrity and Courage, discharge duly the several Trusts reposed in them, to the safety and glory of our King and his Kingdom; and for us and all our fellow-Soldiers, we most humbly beseech thee [...]o endue us with such virtues as may adorn the Profession of Christian Warriours; more particularly with Loyalty, Fortitude, and Temperance, and with upright, contented, and charitable Spirits: We pray thee likewise for all Bishops and Curats, and for all Estates of Men in thy Holy Catholick Church, that every Member of the same in his Vocation or Ministry, may truly and diligently serve thee. ALmighty God, the Fountain of all Wisdom, who knowest our necessities before we ask, and our Ignorance in asking; we beseech thee to have compassion upon our infirmities; and those things, which, for our unworthiness, we dare not, and for our blindness, we cannot ask, vouchsafe to give us, for the worthiness of thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

The Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the Love of God, and the Fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore, Amen.

O God, the Protector of all that trust in thee, without whom nothing is strong, nothing is holy, encrease and multiply upon me thy mercy; that thou being my Ruler and Guide, I may so pass through things temporal, that I finally lose not the things eternal: Grant this O heavenly Father, for Jesus Christ's sake our Lord, Amen.

[Ashwednesday.]

ALmighty and everlasting God, who hatest nothing that thou hast made, and dost forgive the sins of all them that are penitent; create and make in me a new and contrite heart, that I worthily lamenting my sins, (those particularly which I have committed this day in thought, word, or deed) and acknowledging my wretchedness, may obtain of thee, the God of all mercy, perfect remission and forgiveness, through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

O God, from whom all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works do proceed, give unto thy servant that peace which the world cannot give; that both my heart may be set to obey thy Commandments; and also that by thee being defended from the fear of my Enemies, I may pass my time in rest and quietness; through the merits of Jesus Christ my Saviour, Amen.

PROPER COLLECTS ON Special Occasions.

In Time of War.

O Almighty God, King of all Kings, and Governour of all things, whose power no Creature is able to resist; to whom it belongeth justly to punish sinners, and to be merciful to them that truly repent; Save and deliver us, we humbly beseech thee, from the hands of our enemies; abate their pride, asswage their malice, and confound their devices; that we being armed with thy defence, may be preserved evermore from all perils, to glorifie thee who are the only giver of all Victory, through the merits of thy only Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

[Publish'd Anno 1628.]

O God our refuge and strength, who teachest our hands to war, and our fingers to fight, and without whom, the Horse and Chariot is in vain prepared against the day of Battle; Defend us we beseech thee, with thy mighty power, and save us with thine out stretched Arm; that by the glory of thy strength, our Forces may be preserved, and our Armies made Victorious both at Sea and Land; evermore serving under his banner, who hath led captivity Captive; and as a mighty Conquerour, hath by his Cross, triumphed over his Enemies, even Jesus Christ our Lord; to whom with thee and the holy Ghost, be all honour and glory, world without end, Amen.

In an Expedition.

[17 after Trin.]

LOrd we pray thee, that thy Grace may always prevent and follow us, through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

[Sexagesima,]

O Lord God, who seest that we put not our trust in any thing that we do; mercifully grant, that by thy power we may be defended against all adversity, through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

O Lord of Hosts, look down in mercy upon us; let thy favourable Countenance be indulgent towards us: & as thou didst protect thy people Israel in their march through Egypt, so let thy Angel of light direct us, and defend us from all adversity; grant us we beseech thee, strength, courage, resolution, temperance, and prosperous successes; that when we return in Victory, we may give the glory of all our Triumphs, to Jesus Christ the mighty Conquerour, who with thee O Father, and the holy Spirit, art one God blessed for ever, Amen.

When the King's Person is in the Army, in time of War. publish'd Anno 43.

O Lord guard the Person of thy Servant the King.
Who putteth his trust in thee.
Send to him, and to his Armies, help from thy holy place.
And evermore mightily defend them.
Confound the designs of all those that are risen up against him.
And let not their malicious wickedness approach near to hurt him.
O Lord hear our prayer.
And let our cry come unto thee.

O Lord God of Hosts, who givest Victory unto Kings, and didst deliver David thy Servant from the peril of the Sword; hear us, we beseech thee, most miserable sinners, who do here pour out our Souls before thee, entirely desiring the protection of thine hand upon thy Servant, and our sacred Master, the Kings Majesty: Let him find safety under the [...]dow of thy wings, and preserve his person as the apple of thine own Eye. Bless his counsels with Success, and his enterprises with Victory; that he may go on to be a terror to all those that oppose him, and to be as the dew of the [...]ter rain, upon the hearts of all that [...]ove him: Make him the Author of an [...]onourable and advantagious Peace, and [...]erpetual prosperity to these Nations; [...]nd after a long and prosperous Reign upon Earth, let him triumph with thee in Glory, world without end, Amen.

O Lord our God, who upholdest and governest all things in Heaven and Earth; receive our humble prayers, with our Thanksgivings, for our Sovereign Lord, James, our gracious King and Governour; preserve his Person from all dangers; bind up his Soul in the bundle of life; gird him with strength to the battle; contend with those who contend with him; subdue thou his Enemies under him; and suffer no weapon form'd against him to prosper; give him the shield of thy Salvation, and make him a glorious Conquerour, both now and for evermore, through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

In a Siege.

[4 after Epiph.]

O God, who knowest us to be set it the midst of so many and great dangers, that by reason of the frailty of our Nature, we cannot always stand upright, grant to us such strength and protection, as may support us in all dangers, and carry us through all temptations through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

A Prayer to be used by the besieged.

O God, the refuge of all that fly to thee for Succour, look down in compassion upon our present necessities; thou art the Lord of Hosts, and the strength of all Nations; if thou keepest not the City, the Watchmen wake but in vain: Save us, we beseech thee O Lord, and defend us from the designs of our Enemies: endue our Governour with wisdom, our Officers with bravery, our Soldiers with courage, our Labourers with strength, and all the Garrison with Noble Resolution; support the weary, comfort the afflicted, and translate those that shall here finish their course, into the heavenly Jerusalem: continue to preserve this place in the hands of thine Anointed, and turn back our Enemies with shame and confusion; so shall we for ever praise thy name O Jesu, who with the Father and the holy Spirit, art one God blessed for ever, Amen.

Before a Battle.

THou O Lord art just and powerful, O defend our cause against the face of the enemy; O God, thou art a strong [Page 44] Tower of defence to all that flee unto thee; O save us from the violence of the Enemy.

O Lord of hosts fight for us, that we may glorifie thee: O suffer us not to sink under the weight of our sins, or the violence of the Enemy.

O Lord arise, help us, and deliver us, for thy name's sake.

O Most glorious and powerful Lord God, the Lord of Hosts, that rulest and commandest all things; thou sittest in the Throne judging right, and therefore we make our Addresses to thy Divine Majesty in this our necessity; that thou wouldst take the cause into thine own hand, and judge between us and our Enemies. Stir up thy strength, O Lord, and come and help us, for thou givest not alway the Battle to the strong, but canst save by many or by few. O let not our sins now cry against us for vengeance, but hear us, thy poor servants, begging mercy, and imploring thy help, and that thou wouldst be a defence unto us against the face of the Enemy: make it appear thou art our Saviour and mighty Deliverer, through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

A more particular Application.

O Lord God, in whose hand are the issues of Life and Death; we most humbly beseech thee to have mercy upon us; Arise, O God, help us and deliver us for thine honour; strengthen [...], that we may stand fast, and acquit our selves like men; call not our sins to remembrance, O God, but be reconciled [...]to us, through the Merits of the blessed Jesus, that whether we live or die, [...]e may be thine: Spare us, O Lord, spare [...]s, if it be thy blessed will; if otherwise, let Death be swallowed up in Victory both temporal and eternal.

Inspire us, O God, with noble resolutions to prefer a glorious danger, before a shameful flight; and let us never be branded with those ugly sins of cowardise in the face of an Enemy, or ingra [...]itude to our Royal Master (who hath so long maintained us) but strengthen our hands, inflame our hearts, and conduct us by thy Divine Providence to prosperous successes: And let thy Bene [...]iction be upon us now and ever, for [...]he sake of Jesus Christ our Mediator [...]d Advocate, Amen.

[Here let the Soldier vow to God amendment of Life, and some extraordinary act of Charity.]

In Sickness.

O Merciful and righteous Lord, the God of health and of sickness, of life and of death; I most unfeignedly acknowledge that my great abuse of those many days of strength and welfare which thou hast afforded me, hath most justly deserv'd thy present visitation. I desire, O Lord, humbly to accept of this punishment of mine iniquity, and to bear the indignation of the Lord, because I have sinned against him. And, O thou merciful Father, who designest not the ruin, but the amendment of those whom thou scourgest, I beseech thee by thy Grace so to sanctifie this correction of thine to me, that this sickness of my body may be a means of health to my Soul: Make me diligent to search my Heart: And do thou, O Lord, enable me to discover every accursed thing, how closely soever concealed there, that by the removal thereof, I may make way for the removal of this punishment. Heal my Soul, O Lord, which hath sinned against thee; and then if it be thy blessed will, heal my body also: [Page 47] restore the voice of joy and health unto my dwelling, that I may live to praise thee, and to bring forth fruits of Repentance. But if in thy wisdom thou hast otherwise disposed; if thou hast determined that this sickness shall be unto [...]eath, I beseech thee to fit and prepare [...]e for it; give me that sincere and ear [...]est repentance to which thou hast pro [...]ised mercy and pardon: Wean my [...]art from the World and all its fading [...]nities, and make me to gasp and pant [...]ter those more excellent and durable [...]oys which are at thy right hand for ever. Lord lift thou up the light of thy counte [...]nce upon me, and in all the pains of my [...]ody, in all the agonies of my Spirit, let [...]y comforts refresh my Soul, and enable [...]e patiently to wait till my change come. [...]d grant, O Lord, that when my earthly [...]ouse of this tabernacle is dissolved, I may [...]ve a building of God, an house not made [...]ith hands, eternal in the Heavens; and [...]at for his sake, who by his precious [...]ood hath purchased it for me, even [...]esus Christ, Amen.

In any publick Calamity.

O Lord we beseech thee favourably to hear the Prayers of thy People, that [Page 48] we who are justly punished for our Offences, may be mercifully delivered by thy goodness, for the glory of thy name, through Jesus Christ our Saviour, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end, Amen.

A General Thanksgiving.

ALmighty God, Father of all mercies, we thine unworthy Servants, do give thee most humble and hearty thanks for all thy goodness and lovingkindness to us, and to all men; we bless thee for our Creation, Preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all, for thine inestimable Love, in the redemption of the world by ou [...] Lord Jesus Christ, for the means of Grace, and for the hope of Glory; and we beseech the [...]e, give us that due sense of all thy mercies, that our hearts may be unfeignedly thankful, and that we may shew forth thy praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up our selves to thy Service, and by walking before thee in holiness and righteousness all our days, through Jesus Christ ou [...] [Page 49] Lord; to whom with thee and the holy Ghost, be all honour and glory, world without end, Amen.

The Office after Victory, or Deliverance from an Enemy. [In the Sea Service.]
A Psalm or Hymn of Praise and Thanksgiving after Victory.

IF the Lord had not been on our side, now may we say; if the Lord himself had not been on our side, when men [...]ose up against us.

They had swallowed us up quick; when they were so wrathfully displeased [...]t us.

Yea, the waters had drowned us, and the stream had gone over our Soul: the deep Waters of the proud had gone over our Soul.

But praised be the Lord, who hath [...]ot given us over as a prey unto them.

The Lord hath wrought a mighty Sal [...]ation for us.

We gat not this by our own Sword, [...]ither was it our own Arm that saved [Page 50] us; but thy right hand, and thine Arm, and the light of thy countenance, because thou hadst a favour unto us.

The Lord hath appeared for us; the Lord hath overthrown our▪ Enemies, and dashed in pieces those that rose up against us.

Therefore not unto us, O Lord, not unto us, but unto thy name be given the glory.

The Lord hath done great things for us; the Lord hath done great things for us, for which we rejoyce.

Our help standeth in the name of the Lord, who hath made Heaven and Eart [...].

Blessed be the name of the Lord, fro [...] [...]his time forth for evermore.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, World without end, Amen.

After this Hymn may be sung the [...] Deum.

Then this Collect.

O Almighty God, the Sovereign Commander of all the World, in wh [...] hand is power and might, which [...] able to withstand; We bless and [...] ni [...]e [Page 51] thy great and glorious Name for this happy Victory, the whole Glory whereof we do ascribe to thee, who art the only giver of Victory. And we beseech thee, give us Grace to improve this great mercy to thy Glory, the advancement of thy Gospel, the Honour of our Soveraign, and as much as in us lyeth, to the good of all Mankind. And we beseech thee give us such a sense of this great mercy, as may engage us to a true thankfulness, such as may appear in our lives by an humble, holy, and obedient walking before thee all our days, through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with thee, and the Holy Spirit, as for all thy mercies, so in particular for this Victory and Deliverance, be all Glory and Honour, World without end, Amen.
