            <p>Users should be aware of the process of creating the TCP texts, and therefore of any assumptions that can be made about the data.</p>
            <p>Text selection was based on the New Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature (NCBEL). If an author (or for an anonymous work, the title) appears in NCBEL, then their works are eligible for inclusion. Selection was intended to range over a wide variety of subject areas, to reflect the true nature of the print record of the period. In general, first editions of a works in English were prioritized, although there are a number of works in other languages, notably Latin and Welsh, included and sometimes a second or later edition of a work was chosen if there was a compelling reason to do so.</p>
            <p>Image sets were sent to external keying companies for transcription and basic encoding. Quality assurance was then carried out by editorial teams in Oxford and Michigan. 5% (or 5 pages, whichever is the greater) of each text was proofread for accuracy and those which did not meet QA standards were returned to the keyers to be redone. After proofreading, the encoding was enhanced and/or corrected and characters marked as illegible were corrected where possible up to a limit of 100 instances per text. Any remaining illegibles were encoded as &lt;gap&gt;s. Understanding these processes should make clear that, while the overall quality of TCP data is very good, some errors will remain and some readable characters will be marked as illegible. Users should bear in mind that in all likelihood such instances will never have been looked at by a TCP editor.</p>
            <p>The texts were encoded and linked to page images in accordance with level 4 of the TEI in Libraries guidelines.</p>
            <p>Copies of the texts have been issued variously as SGML (TCP schema; ASCII text with mnemonic sdata character entities); displayable XML (TCP schema; characters represented either as UTF-8 Unicode or text strings within braces); or lossless XML (TEI P5, characters represented either as UTF-8 Unicode or TEI g elements).</p>

            <p>IN the Primitive <hi>Christians</hi> Times <hi>Africa</hi> was held not to be more fertile in her production of <hi>Mon<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>sters,</hi> then of <hi>Hereſies:</hi> which uphappy fruitfulneſs if, with <hi>Astrologers,</hi> we may, with any appearance of Truth, aſcribe to the prevailing Influence of its ruling <hi>Planet;</hi> of later years we may as juſtly ſuſpect, that the Heavens have looked upon <hi>Europe</hi> alſo with as <hi>malign</hi> an <hi>Aſpect.</hi> For, if we conſider either thoſe <hi>Here<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>tical Opinions,</hi> that firſt <hi>ſwarmed</hi> in the <hi>Low-Countries,</hi> through that <hi>Toleration</hi> and <hi>Indulgence</hi> they found there, after they had been baniſhed and drove from their Native <hi>Hives;</hi> or thoſe, that afterwards <hi>trans<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>planted</hi> themſelves hither amidſt our late Diſtracti<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ons, which if they did not actually <hi>begin,</hi> they unhappily <hi>fomented</hi> and <hi>continued</hi> at leaſt: we have very little reaſon to account theſe <hi>Parts</hi> of <hi>Christendom</hi> leſs <hi>tainted</hi> at preſent, then that <hi>Quarter</hi> of the <hi>World</hi> was of old, with that <hi>Infection. Hereſie</hi> is of it ſelf <hi>impudent:</hi> and thoſe <hi>croaking Religions,</hi> that like <hi>Pharoah's Frogs</hi> creep into the <hi>Ovens</hi> and <hi>Kneading-Troughs</hi> at firſt for <hi>Bread</hi> only, will, if per<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>mitted

               </gap>achers and Founders of <hi>Novel Opinions</hi> frame at firſt, and how different and unequal their <hi>Super-ſtructure</hi> is at laſt from their <hi>Foundation:</hi> which I ſhall not diſpute whether it be, becauſe thoſe, who <hi>ſucceed</hi> them, im<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>prove their <hi>Principles</hi> higher, then they were <hi>ori<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ginally</hi> intended; or whether it be naturally incident to ſuch Spirits to pretend <hi>Liberty of Conſcience,</hi> and <hi>Religious</hi> Affairs, when their chiefeſt Aim is <hi>Innovati<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>on</hi> both in <hi>Church</hi> and <hi>State.</hi> It is therefore the beſt Prudence and Policy of a <hi>Prince,</hi> or <hi>State,</hi> to <hi>eradi<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>cate</hi> and <hi>root-up</hi> thoſe <hi>Weeds</hi> out of the <hi>Gardens</hi> of their Government, while <hi>young</hi> and <hi>tender;</hi> or, as we deal vvith <hi>Wolves,</hi> vvhen got at liberty, <hi>unkennel</hi> all the <hi>Mastiffs</hi> in a Country to <hi>worry</hi> them, e're they come to <hi>litter,</hi> and fill the ſoil vvith ſo <hi>peſtilent</hi> a <hi>Ver<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>mine:</hi> and not to hazard the <hi>future</hi> Peace of their Kingdomes by any ſeeming <hi>Political,</hi> or <hi>at-preſent-ne<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ceſſary</hi> Toleration. This <hi>Experience</hi> through conti<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>nued <hi>Ages</hi> hath made good, and a late <hi>Example</hi> in the <hi>French</hi> State under the moſt <hi>Chriſtian</hi> King confirms. Which <hi>Church,</hi> as She retains Her antient and priſtine <hi>Privileges</hi> on one ſide free from the <hi>Papal <g ref="char:V">Ʋ</g>ſurpation;</hi> as appears by the late <hi>Cenſures</hi> and <hi>Decree</hi> of the Court of <hi>Parliament</hi> at <hi>Paris</hi> there paſt on the tvven<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ty
<pb n="3" facs="tcp:105832:3"/>ſecond of <hi>January</hi> laſt againſt thoſe <hi>Concluſions,</hi> that were intended to have been aſſerted in the <hi>Sor<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>bon,</hi> in defence of ſeveral <hi>Theſes,</hi> and <hi>Poſitions,</hi> aſſert<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ive of the <hi>Popes</hi> Authority over the <hi>Church,</hi> and making Him equally <hi>infallible</hi> with <hi>Jeſus Chriſt:</hi> So doth She on the other hand keep back from <hi>In<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>dulging</hi> and <hi>upstart Opinions,</hi> or <hi>novel Factions</hi> in Religion; which, though at <hi>firſt</hi> they may ſeem <hi>fooliſh</hi> and <hi>contemptible,</hi> yet having <hi>ſpread</hi> once, and <hi>gotten head,</hi> become oftentimes of dangerous Con<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſequence to a <hi>State,</hi> and not ſeldome venture to give <hi>Check-mate</hi> to the <hi>Prince</hi> Himſelf.                <hi>Chastelet,</hi> con<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>firmed by an <hi>Arrest</hi> of <hi>Parliament,</hi> by power whereof in the end of <hi>February</hi> laſt one called <hi>Simon Morin</hi> was burnt alive at <hi>Paris.</hi> He was born at <hi>Au<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>male,</hi> his <hi>Parentage</hi> but ordinary, his <hi>Education</hi> not greatly Learned, his <hi>Parts</hi> quick enough, but either by deferbeſcency or deſign brought into ſuch a ſubſervi<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ency to a <hi>Religious</hi> and <hi>reſerved</hi> Temper, that he ſeem<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ed to be ſo far <hi>Master</hi> of himſelſelf and his Endow<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ments, that by that very Means he might be able to manage any <hi>Practice</hi> or <hi>Deſign</hi> for his own Repute: which (as it is thought) put him upon a Project of raiſing a <hi>new Sect</hi> by ways ſeemingly <hi>wilde</hi> enough; as if, becauſe the <hi>Turks</hi> account their <hi>Santons,</hi> or <hi>Fools,</hi> in the Catalogue of their <hi>Saints</hi> or <hi>Happy</hi> men, be<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>cauſe they paſs <hi>this</hi> Life without care for the things of <hi>this</hi> World, it were the <hi>nearest</hi> Cut to the acqui<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ring of a <hi>Sanctified</hi> Repute to purchaſe it by Projects
<pb n="4" facs="tcp:105832:4"/>abſolutely <hi>mad,</hi> or purely <hi>ridiculous.</hi> Such certainly his Attempt of <hi>boasting</hi> and <hi>profeſſing</hi> himſelf to be <hi>Jeſus Chriſt</hi> will ſeem at firſt: but when we conſider <hi>how</hi> that <hi>King's Army</hi> was then intended; and with<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>all how commonly when <hi>Princes</hi> are upon <hi>forein</hi> De<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſigns Rebellions are fomented at <hi>home,</hi> and thoſe com<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>monly begin either with the <hi>Ring-leader</hi> of a <hi>new Sect,</hi> or an <hi>Innovation</hi> in <hi>Religion</hi> (as it is manifeſt from our <hi>own</hi> Home <hi>Histories</hi> both in the Time of King <hi>John,</hi> and other Kings) we may not improbably ſuſpect, that his Deſign was rather to arrive at <hi>Cano<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>nization</hi> the way that <hi>John Clemens</hi> and <hi>Ravilliack</hi> had done before him. To back his Project, his <hi>Viſage Hair,</hi> and <hi>Beard</hi> (which, it is ſaid, he wore <hi>bi-partite,</hi> or two-<hi>forked,</hi> according to the common <hi>Pictures</hi> of <hi>Jeſus Chriſt</hi>) were ſuited and formed as near as he could, to the imitation of our <hi>Saviour;</hi> and a negli<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>gence in <hi>Apparel</hi> ſtudiously affected, and all other Things ſuitable to the ſtirring up a Belief in the minds of his <hi>Diſciples,</hi> that he was the <hi>ſame</hi> indeed he would be <hi>taken for.</hi> His <hi>Life</hi> is for the greateſt part unknown to us, it having been <hi>obſcure</hi> and <hi>unſetled,</hi> while he <hi>travelled far and near to gain Proſelytes;</hi> of whom within the ſpace of twenty years a very conſiderable number, and too great to be truſted by the <hi>Magi<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſtrate,</hi> was infected with his <hi>Errors:</hi> which (as we are informed from <hi>France</hi>) were found at his <hi>Convi<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ction</hi> to be many more, and his <hi>Practices</hi> very danger<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ous, both to the <hi>Church,</hi> and to the <hi>State;</hi> he ha<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ving (as we ſaid) engaged ſo great a number of Per<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſons within ſo ſmall a ſpace of time, that it was more then ſeaſonable for the <hi>Prince</hi> to look after him in that

               <hi>Conjuncture</hi> of Affairs, and <hi>purge</hi> his Countrey of ſuch a <hi>Monster,</hi> that might in time produce ſuch <hi>deadly effects.</hi> He was therefore ſeized, and commit<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ted to the<note n="*" place="margin">The publick Gaol at <hi>Paris,</hi> like our <hi>New<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>gate.</hi>

               <hi>Conciergery,</hi> where little ſign of <hi>amend<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ment</hi> or <hi>repentance</hi> appearing, but greater <hi>danger</hi> ra<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ther of the <hi>ſpreading</hi> his Errors by the concourſe of his <hi>Diſciples</hi> thither, he was after Tryal condemned, and publickly burnt; his <hi>Errors</hi> at the ſame time ſuf<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>fering the ſame Condemnation, and forbidden to be <hi>propagated,</hi> or <hi>publiſhed;</hi> a <hi>Book,</hi> wrote by him, en<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>tituled <hi>Penſées du MORIN,</hi> (or, <hi>The Opinions of MON<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>RIN</hi>) containing, as it ſhould ſeem, the ſubſtance of his <hi>Erroneous Doctrine</hi> being burnt together with him: for which reaſon it is impoſſible to give you an exact <hi>Catalogue</hi> of his other <hi>Errors;</hi> but it may be ſufficient to know, that they were ſo monſtrous, that the <hi>Civil Magistrate</hi> thought them not fit to come to the knowledge of any elſe, leſt they might be liable to the ſame <hi>Infection.</hi> To put a final end to ſuch an <hi>Imposture,</hi> and the farther ſpreading of his <hi>Errors,</hi> his <hi>Diſciples,</hi> which we have ſaid were numerous, were every where <hi>impriſoned,</hi> and enjoyned to <hi>recant,</hi> or be <hi>baniſhed,</hi> and ſent to the <hi>Gallies;</hi> and among the others thoſe two <hi>Priests,</hi> whom he had ſeduced, and who (we are informed) attended him, beſides <hi>thoſe</hi> appointed by the <hi>Magistrate,</hi> to his <hi>Execution.</hi> This was His <hi>Beginning, Progreſs,</hi> and <hi>End;</hi> who might probably, if he had not been <hi>ſtopt</hi> here, have in time produced <hi>Troubles,</hi> which would not quickly have found an <hi>end:</hi> So <hi>pestilent</hi> a Thing is <hi>Hereſie</hi> and <hi>Er<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ror,</hi> when it once gets <hi>Head,</hi> for to be <hi>rebated;</hi> and is much eaſilier <hi>prevented</hi> in the <hi>growth,</hi> then <hi>cut-off</hi>
               <pb n="6" facs="tcp:105832:5"/>when <hi>grown-up.</hi> For, as we had in our memories the <hi>ſame Game</hi> plaid here in <hi>England</hi> by <hi>James Naylor;</hi> ſo, had not the <hi>timely ſeverity</hi> of the then <hi>temporary Powers</hi> curbed him, I do not doubt, but had he con<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>tinued, and been ſtill on foot, he would have put in, as well as his <hi>Party</hi> do, for a <hi>Toleration.</hi> But (thanks be to God) it is not <hi>France</hi> onely, which in this <hi>late</hi> Example, or thoſe former ones of <hi>Caeſar Vaninus</hi> and others at <hi>Tholouze;</hi> nor the State of <hi>Geneva</hi> in that of <hi>Servetus,</hi> burnt there on <hi>October</hi> 27, 1553. for denying the <hi>Divinity</hi> of our <hi>Saviour,</hi> and other <hi>Errors;</hi> that can make ſhew of their oppoſing all ſuch <hi>erroneous</hi> and <hi>novel Opinions,</hi> as might diſturb the <hi>Peace</hi> of the <hi>Church,</hi> and <hi>ſerenity</hi> of their <hi>Go<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>vernment:</hi> But <hi>England</hi> may as juſtly boaſt of <hi>Her</hi> conſtant extirpation of <hi>Hereſie</hi> and <hi>Schiſm,</hi> as of <hi>Her</hi> purging out <hi>Superstition;</hi> and may <hi>She</hi> continue in that <hi>Mean,</hi> neither inclining to the <hi>right</hi> Hand nor to the <hi>left,</hi> but keep <hi>inviolate</hi> that <hi>mediocrity,</hi> whereon, as on <hi>Her</hi> true <hi>Baſis,</hi> Her <hi>Intereſt</hi> is ſo certainly ground<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ed and eſtabliſhed.</p>
