TO THE READER.

MY Design is not in the least to reflect upon the Learned and Regular Physicians of the College, whom I sincerely honour for their Judgment and Integrity, but to lay open the Ig­norance and Fraud of a certain Cabal, who have crept into that Society by indirect or base means, and do every where boast among the Ignorant, that they are Members of the College, while they are the disgrace and reproach of it, and have nothing else to value themselves upon, but their foolish cracking, the College, the College, and I am of the College, at the expence of its Honour and Reputation. Some of these have been Fanatick Preachers, Splitters of Causes, Serving­men, and Mechanicks, who never well un­derstood the First Rudiments of Learning, and yet by their Impudence and Tricks, under the Cover of some Foreign Prince or Embassador (one disguising his Name by an Out-Landish Pronunciation, another Writing it in Latin, for fear of being known) or by some Man­date surreptitiously procured, have stolen the Degree of Doctor from our Universities; whilst [Page]others fly beyond Sea to some Foreign Universi­ty, and there obtain that Degree by the powerful perswasive of Money, which their Ignorance was uncapable of at Home, and then they return as wise as they went, adorned with the Fine Flumes of a Traveller and a Doctor. These are the most ar­rogant Pretenders, who would engross to them­selves all the Knowledge and Practice of Physick, whilst they do not know so much as the Names of Diseases, and much less the Virtues of Medicines; and yet they strut and swagger with the Name of the College, as if that were a sufficient Charm to Qualifie them for that Noble Profession of Phy­sick; and superciliously despise all others, even those who have been Regularly admitted Doctors in our own Universities, as Quacks and Moun­tebancks, whom themselves do so nearly re­semble by their Ignorance and Confidence, that they have nothing but the Name of the College to distinguish them. These are they that Assume to themselves the Sole Government of that Society, and admit whom they please for Money, without Examination, and however otherwise unqua­lified; but exclude others that are Regularly ad­mitted Doctors. This is the miserable state of the College at present, in which such men bear Rule, who (by the Confederacy of some Doctors of our own Universities whom they have cullied into their Cabal) have erected and established a [Page]Scandalous Monopoly of Physick, to the great Dis­honour of the Profession, Detriment of the Univer­sities, and infinite Prejudice of Mens Lives. Now the College being at present made up of so many Foreign, and so few Legal and truly Honourable Doctors of our own Universities, and the mischief still spreading further, so that in time there are like to be none (but what have taken their Degrees Abroad, or of their Cabal) allowed by their Mono­poly to practise Physick, or by them owned to be Physicians: It is therefore thought convenient, for preventing this growing evil, to present the World with a true Catalogue of the Doctors in Physick of our Two Universities, diligently and carefully collected out of the Registers of Oxford and Cambridge, thatso by examining the Cata­logue of their College (so often Printed and di­spersed about the Town) with these of our Universities, every one may be able to distin­guish the Legal and truly Honourable Physici­ans, from the Base, Illegitimate, Domineering By-blows of Aesculapius; and that they finding themselves detected, may be ashamed of their proceedings, and good Men be encouraged to take their Degrees Regularly at Home in our own Universities.
