Anyone can now take and use these texts for their own purposes, but we respectfully request that due credit and attribution is given to their original source.</p>
            <p>Users should be aware of the process of creating the TCP texts, and therefore of any assumptions that can be made about the data.</p>
            <p>Text selection was based on the New Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature (NCBEL). If an author (or for an anonymous work, the title) appears in NCBEL, then their works are eligible for inclusion. Selection was intended to range over a wide variety of subject areas, to reflect the true nature of the print record of the period. In general, first editions of a works in English were prioritized, although there are a number of works in other languages, notably Latin and Welsh, included and sometimes a second or later edition of a work was chosen if there was a compelling reason to do so.</p>
            <p>Image sets were sent to external keying companies for transcription and basic encoding. Quality assurance was then carried out by editorial teams in Oxford and Michigan. 5% (or 5 pages, whichever is the greater) of each text was proofread for accuracy and those which did not meet QA standards were returned to the keyers to be redone. After proofreading, the encoding was enhanced and/or corrected and characters marked as illegible were corrected where possible up to a limit of 100 instances per text. Any remaining illegibles were encoded as &lt;gap&gt;s. Understanding these processes should make clear that, while the overall quality of TCP data is very good, some errors will remain and some readable characters will be marked as illegible. Users should bear in mind that in all likelihood such instances will never have been looked at by a TCP editor.</p>
            <p>The texts were encoded and linked to page images in accordance with level 4 of the TEI in Libraries guidelines.</p>
            <p>Copies of the texts have been issued variously as SGML (TCP schema; ASCII text with mnemonic sdata character entities); displayable XML (TCP schema; characters represented either as UTF-8 Unicode or text strings within braces); or lossless XML (TEI P5, characters represented either as UTF-8 Unicode or TEI g elements).</p>

            <p>R 3. <hi>God ſeeth this to be the fitteſt Method for our Cure.</hi>

            <p>R 4. <hi>Fore-going Sorrows raiſe the price of following Mercies.</hi>

            <p>Q. 2. <hi>See you not that Carnal Pleaſure is far more dangerous than all your Sorrow?</hi> Would you be in the condition of the ungodly, that proſper in the World?</p>
            <p>Q. 3. <hi>Would you not rather follow your Saviour, and be conformed to Him and his Saints, than to the Wicked?</hi> Would you not go the com<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>mon way to Heaven?</p>
            <p>Q. 4. <hi>Hath not Suffering done you good, and the Croſs bore you good Fruit?</hi> Why then afraid of it, and why ſo deſirous of the Eaſe and Pleaſure that hath often Hurt you?</p>
            <p>Obj. <hi>But 'tis not all Sorrow that foretells Joy.</hi>

               <hi>Sol.</hi> No, but all Sorrow of theſe three ſorts doth foretell it.</p>
            <p n="1">1. Sorrow <hi>undergone in ſincerity for Chriſt's cauſe and ſake.</hi>
            </p>
            <p n="2">2. Sorrow <hi>performed as a Duty, for Gods diſhonour by our own and other Mens ſins, and for Miſeries thence riſing.</hi>

            <p n="3">3. Sorrow <hi>of Chaſtiſement patiently ſuffered, and improved unto Refor<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>mation.</hi>

            <p>E. 2. <hi>Condemn not the Generation of the Juſt, becauſe you ſee them ſuf<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>fer more than other Men.</hi> Be not as ſome Beaſts; which, when one of their Fellows is wounded, do all forſake him. —And yet, err not on the other hand; think not that all be Bleſſed hereafter, that be Afflicted here. Know the Cauſe, e're you judge of the Suffering.</p>
            <p>D. 2. <hi>Chriſt's Death and Departure was the cauſe of his Diſciples Sor<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>row.</hi> Three things grieved them;</p>
            <p n="1">1. That <hi>their Beloved Lord muſt be took from them.</hi>
            </p>
            <p n="2">2. That <hi>He muſt Die in ſuch a manner, painfully and ignominiouſly.</hi>
            </p>
            <p n="3">3. That <hi>He muſt Die while they had ſo little fore-ſight of his Reſurrection and Return.</hi> Had they known what would follow, they had been leſs troubled.</p>
            <p>D. 3. <hi>The Sorrows of Chriſt's Diſciples are but ſhort.</hi> For,</p>
            <p>R. 1. <hi>Life is but ſhort.</hi>
            </p>
            <p>R. 2. <hi>God's diſpleaſure with his Servants, is but ſhort,</hi> Pſal. 30.5.</p>
            <p>R. 3. <hi>Our Trial, muſt be but ſhort.</hi> God will ſee that the Furnace be not too Hot, nor we in it too Long.</p>
            <p>R. 4. <hi>The Power of thoſe that afflict us, is but ſhort.</hi>
            </p>
            <p>Obſerve then,</p>
            <p n="1">I. 1. <hi>Religion is not a whit diſparaged by ſhort and ſmall Sufferings.</hi> Do any think them long? Let them conſider,</p>
            <p n="1">1. <hi>Your Suffering will be no longer than your Sin.</hi>
            </p>
            <p n="2">2. <hi>Nor any longer than you make them NECESSARY.</hi>
            </p>
            <p n="3">3. <hi>No, not ſo long as you do deſerve.</hi>
            </p>
            <p n="4">4. <hi>Nor ſo long as the Sufferings of the <g ref="char:V">Ʋ</g>ngodly,</hi> &amp;c.</p>
            <p n="5">5. <hi>Nor ſo long as your following Joys; nor ſo great.</hi>
            </p>
            <p n="1">I. 2. <hi>It is reaſonable that we moderate and mix our Sorrows with Joy.</hi> Being they be as hath been ſaid; <hi>Rejoice evermore,</hi> is no unreaſon<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>able command.</p>
            <p>D. 4. <hi>Christ will again viſit his ſorrowful Diſciples.</hi> He means not to forſake them, when he hides his Face from them. For why?</p>
            <p>R. 1. <hi>He hath Conquered the greatest Enemies already; and there be none remaining to Conquer Him.</hi>
            </p>
            <p>R. 2. <hi>He retains ſtill his Relation unto his Diſciples.</hi> He is their Head, while they ſuffer ſo in the World.</p>
            <p>R. 3. <hi>He loveth us now He is in Heaven as much as ever He did on Earth.</hi> He lays not by the leaſt meaſure of his Love.</p>
            <p>R. 4. <hi>His Covenant with his Servants is ſtill in force.</hi> And his Pro<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>miſes cannot be broken.</p>
            <p>R. 5. <hi>His own Intereſt, Honour, Office, Preparations, do engage him to return unto his diſconſolate Flock.</hi> It doth ſo; And,</p>
            <p>R. 6. <hi>It is for their ſakes that He withdraweth for a time.</hi> The Bitter of it, is intended as Medicinal for their Benefit. John 16.7. <hi>It is ex<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>pedient for you that I go away.</hi>
            </p>
            <p>Mark ye then, and be Exhorted.</p>
            <p>E. 1. <hi>Miſunderſtand not the Departings of your Lord.</hi> Say not with the Evil Servant, My Lord delayeth his coming.</p>
            <p n="1">1. <hi>He will Return to Judge the World,</hi> at his appointed day, <hi>Job</hi> 19.25.</p>
            <p n="2">2. <hi>He will Return to his ſeemingly Forſaken Flocks.</hi> And give them Paſtors after his own Heart, <hi>Jer.</hi> 3.14.</p>
            <p n="3">3. <hi>He will Return to the Souls of his particular Servants ſeemingly For<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſaken.</hi> Weeping endures for a Night, but Joy cometh in the Morn<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ing, <hi>Pſal.</hi> 30.5.</p>
            <p>E. 2. <hi>Learn to behave your ſelves well, till Chriſt doth Return unto you.</hi> Particularly,</p>
            <p n="1">1. <hi>Bear his Abſence, but be not Pleaſed with it.</hi>
            </p>
            <p n="2">2. <hi>Be not too Indifferent neither, but Reſent it much.</hi>
            </p>
            <p n="3">3. <hi>Be not drawn to take another Lord, or Portion, in his ſtead.</hi> Let not Riches, <hi>&amp;c.</hi> ſerve you inſtead of Chriſt.</p>
            <p n="4">4. <hi>Be not emboldened to Sin by his Abſence.</hi>
            </p>
            <p n="5">5. <hi>Be not diſcouraged from Duty, by his Abſence,</hi> Heb. 12.12.</p>
            <p>D. 5. <hi>When Chriſt ſhall again appear to his Diſciples, their Sorrows ſhall be turned into Joy.</hi> When He comes, Joy comes with him. When the Sun riſeth, it is Light day, and Froſts are thawed, and all things revived.</p>
            <p n="1">1. <hi>The Deſerted Soul turns from Complaint, to Triumph.</hi> He that ſaid, There is no hope; now ſays, My Lord and my God.</p>
            <p n="2">2. <hi>The Deſerted Church doth the ſame.</hi> Joying in its reſtored Ordi<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>nances, Order, Opportunities, and Advantages.</p>
            <p n="3">3. <hi>The <g ref="char:V">Ʋ</g>niverſal Church ſhall have an end of their Sorrows, and a Har<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>veſt of Joys, when Chriſt returns at the laſt day.</hi>
            </p>
            <p>And here attend ye well.</p>
            <p n="1">1. <hi>It is Chriſt Himſelf that is the Believers Joy.</hi> The Beloved of their Souls.</p>
            <p n="2">2. <hi>And He will not come Alone neither.</hi> He brings an innumerable Company of Bleſſed Saints and Angels.</p>
            <p>D. 6. <hi>The Joy that cometh at Chriſt's return will be a ſecure and ever<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>laſting Joy.</hi> Who ſhould deprive us of it?</p>
            <p n="1">1. <hi>Not our Selves.</hi> For our trying time will be out, and Confir<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>mation will be the reward of Conqueſt.</p>
            <p n="2">2. <hi>Not Devils.</hi> For there they cannot corrupt our Imaginations, or pervert our Underſtandings, or diſturb our Paſſions.</p>
            <p n="3">3. <hi>Not any Men.</hi> The Holy and Bleſſed, will encreaſe our Joy; their Joy will be ours. And as for the Wicked, they will be diſen<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>abled to hurt us, either by Flatteries, Threats, Reproaches <gap reason="illegible" resp="#PDCC" extent="1 word">

            <p>O Neglect not theſe Counſels and Requeſts.</p>
            <p>C. 1. <hi>Spend moſt of your Studies, in confirming your belief of,</hi> 1. <hi>The Truth of the Goſpel.</hi> 2. <hi>The Immortality of the Soul; And,</hi> 3. <hi>The Life to come.</hi> Lay up Treaſure in Heaven; and Live for it, as World<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>lings Live for the Fleſh.</p>
            <p>C. 2. <hi>Flatter not your ſelves with the hopes of Long Life. But make it the Summ of your Religion, Care, and Buſineſs, to be ready for a ſafe and comfortable Death.</hi>
            </p>
            <p>C. 3. <hi>Live as in a conſtant War againſt all Fleſhly Luſts, and Love not the World as it cheriſheth thoſe Luſts.</hi> He is never to be truſted, that falls deeply in Love with Riches.</p>
            <p>C. 4. <hi>Be Furniſhed before-hand with Expectation and Patience, for all Evils that may befall you.</hi> And make not too great a matter of Pover<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ty, or Wrong from Men.</p>
            <p>C. 5. <hi>Take heed of a Self-conceited, <g ref="char:V">Ʋ</g>nhumbled <g ref="char:V">Ʋ</g>nderſtanding, and of haſty, and raſh Concluſions.</hi> It is a Fool that rageth, and is confident.</p>
            <p>C. 6. <hi>Maintain <g ref="char:V">Ʋ</g>nion and Communion with all true Chriſtian Chur<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ches.</hi> Hold to Catholick Principles of meer Chriſtianity. Love CHRISTIANS as Chriſtians, but Love the BEST moſt.</p>
            <p>C. 7. <hi>Be ſure you maintain due Honour and Subjection unto your Go<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>vernours, Prov.</hi> 24.21. Obey no Man againſt God. But if you fall under perſecuting Governours, in patience poſſeſs your Souls, truſt God, and hold faſt Innocency, and abhor Rebellion and Revenge. Do nothing but what God will own. Self-ſaving Men, are uſually the deſtroyers of themſelves and others. Peter, <hi>that drew his Sword for Chriſt, denied him the ſame Night, with Oaths and Curſes.</hi> Fools truſt themſelves, and Wiſe Men truſt God. — We may learn Wit from that Fool, who ſeeing great Guns and Muſquets, asked, <hi>What they were to do;</hi> and being told, <hi>they were to Kill Men,</hi> ſaid preſently; <hi>Do not Men Die here without Killing? In our Countrey they will Die of themſelves.</hi>

            <p>C. 8. <hi>Be ſure you keep up Family Religion.</hi> Eſpecially in the Education of Youth.</p>
            <p>C. 9. <hi>Live in the Love of God and Man.</hi> Bleſſed be they that faithfully practiſe thoſe three Principles which all do profeſs. <hi>Sc.</hi> 1. <hi>To Love God as God above all, and ſo to Obey him.</hi> 2. <hi>To Love our Neighbour as our ſelves.</hi> 3. <hi>And to Do as we would be done unto.</hi>

                  <hi>Doctrine.</hi> To have our Names written in Heaven, is the greateſt Mercy, and firſt, and chiefly, and only for it ſelf to be Rejoiced in. Which ſo puts the eſtimate on all inferior Mercies, that further than they refer to this, they are not to be the matter of our Joy. <hi>For why?</hi>

               <p>R. 1. <hi>All common Mercies may conſiſt with preſent Miſery.</hi>
               </p>
               <p>R. 2. <hi>Yea, they are alſo the ordinary and ſtrong Means of making Men miſerable, and holding them in Miſery.</hi>

               <p>R. 3. <hi>They are often made the Devils Tools to do his Work by, and are uſed againſt God, to the hindrance of the Goſpel, and injury of the Church.</hi>

               <p>R. 4. <hi>All of them may end in Miſery, and leave the Owner in Everlaſt<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ing Woe.</hi>

               <p>But I challenge all the World to tell me,</p>
               <p>Q. 1. <hi>What ſhould be Rejoiced in if not a Name in Heaven? If not the Lord of Life himſelf, the Joy and Glory of Saints?</hi> What is Heaven, but the Enjoyment of Him?</p>
               <p>Q. 2. <hi>Is it not fit we now Rejoice, in that wherein we muſt Everlaſt<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ingly Rejoice?</hi> If you knew the Friend and Place in which you were to have but an hundred years Joy, that fore knowledge would make them preſently more delightful to you, than any other.</p>
               <p>Q. 3. And, <hi>Is not this Joy a Divine, Pure, Profitable, and a War<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>rantable one?</hi> Need you be Aſhamed of this? Is not he the beſt Chriſtian, that hath moſt Love, Joy, and Gratitude? Is not he the likeſt to perform beſt his other Duties, and to conquer his remain<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ing Sins?</p>
               <p>You may be ſure your Names be written in Heaven;</p>
               <p n="1">1. <hi>If Heaven has the preheminence in your Practical Eſteem.</hi> If you are reſolved to ſtick cloſe to Chriſt whatever it coſt you, and take God for your Portion.</p>
