❧ An Abstract of his Majesties Letters Patents, graunted vnto ROGER WOOD and THOMAS SYMCOCKE.

WHereas the Kings most Excellent Ma tie. hath beene gratiously pleased, by his Highnes Letters Patents, to graunt vnto Roger Wood, & Thomas Symcocke, their Assignes and Deputies for the Terme of One and Thirty yeares, full and sole power and Priuiledge, to Imprint, Impresse, Role, Stampe, worke, publish, vtter, sell distribute and disperse, within his Maiesties Realme of England, and Dominion of Wales, all Briefes for Collections, and other thinges whatsoeuer vpon one side onely, of one or more Sheete or Sheetes of Paper, Skinue or Skinnes of Parchment, or any part thereof, as by the said Letters Patents more atlarge may appeare.

His Maiesty by the said Letters Patents hath also prohibited all manner of persons whatsoeuer (other then the said Roger Wood, and Thomas Symcocke, their Executors, Administrators, Deputies and Assignes) to Imprint, or Impresse, Role, Stampe, or worke, or to vtter, sell, distribute, publish abroad, or disperse within England and Wales any of the thinges graunted, vpon payne of Forseyture of all such matters and thinges, as they shall Im­print, Role, Stampe, or worke, or shall vtter, sell, distribute, publish abroad, or disperse, contrary to the said Inhi­bition: the same to be seazed vpon and taken by the said Roger Wood and Thomas Symcocke, or either of them, their or either of their Executors, administrators, Deputies, Factors, or Assignes, to and for their onely vse and vses, and vpon other paynes and Penalties, in the said Letters Pa­tents expressed.

And also hath further inhibited all manner of persons during the said Tearme, from bringing or importing into the said Realme of England, or Dominion of Wales, or any other his Maiesties Dominions, or any oher the partes beyond the Seas any of the thinges graunted, or to put the same or any part thereof so transported (as aforesaid) to sale, or to be vttered, published or dispersed within the said Realme of England or Domi­nion of Wales, vpon payne of Forseyture for euery such offence, to the vses of his Maiesty, his Heyres and Successors, the summe of Forty shillings ouer and be sides the said thinges imported or put to sale, (as foresaid) contrary to the said Letters Patents.

And also his Maiesty hath further by the said Letters Patents, charged and commaunded all Maiors, Sheriffes, Justices of the Peace, Baylisses, Constables, and all other Officers, Ministers, and Subiects whatsoeuer, and also the Master, keepers, Wardens, and Commonal­ty of the Art and mysterie of Stationers of the Citty of London, that they and euery of them shall at all times, during the said Terme, (being thereunto required) be ayding and assisting vnto the said Roger Wood and Thomas Symcocke, their Executors, Administrators, Deputies, Fac­tors, and Assignes, in the viewing, searching, finding out, seazing and taking away of all such matters and thinges, as shall be Imprinted, Ro­led, Stamped wrought, published or done, or be vttered, solde or imported, into any part of the said Dominions (as aforesaid) contrary to the meaning of the said Letters Patents.

And also be ayding and assisting as aforesaid, in the taking, seazing, carrying away, Defacing and making vnseruiceable, of all such Prin­ting presses, Roling-presses, Stampes, and other Instruments or thinges whatsoeuer, which shall be found to be vsed in or about the Imprin­ting, Roling, Stamping, working or doing of any the thinges graunted, contrary to the true meaning of the said Letters Patents and Decree in the Star-chamber concerning Printing.

And hath also inhibited, that no person doe presume to Imprint, Worke, Role, Stampe vpon both sides of the Paper or Parchment, or vtter, sell or dispose of any the thinges graunted, which hath not heretofore beens vsually Printed vpon both sides of Paper or Parchment, or to vse a­ny other fraude or sinister practise whatsoeuer, tending to the hinderance or preiudice of the said Roger Wood and Thomas Symcocke, their Exe­tors, Administrators, or Assignes, concerning the thinges graunted, vpon payne of Forfeyture of the same.

The thinges belonging to this Graunt, viz.
  • All Briefes for Collections.
  • All Publications concerning any Letters Patents.
  • Indentures for Apprentises, Water-workes, Drayning of Lands, & other things.
  • All Bondes and Recognizan­ces for Victualers, Ale­house-keepers and others.
  • Licences to Collect or ga­ther by.
  • Licences for Victualers.
  • Licences for the selling of Wines.
  • And all other Licences.
  • All Bondes, Billes, and Ac­quittances for payments, or receipts of money.
  • Articles concerning the Vi­sitation of Bishops, Arch­deacons, or their Offi­cials.
  • Billes for teaching of Schol­lers.
  • Billes concerning Physiti­ans, Chyrurgions, or o­thers.
  • All Billes for Playes, Chal­lenges, Prizes, Sportes, or Showes whatsoeuer.
  • All Epitaphes, Inscriptions or other Copies, either in Prose or Verse.
  • All Portratures, and Pictures whatsoeuer.
  • Ballads.
  • Billes of Lading.
  • Mappes.
  • Damaske paper.
  • Borders.
  • Printed paper for Silkes, Fu­stians, and other Wares.
  • Writs and Warrants for Sheriffes, and Iustices of Peace.
  • Letters Patents texed.
  • Indentures texed.
  • Billes for the Court of Cons­cience.
  • Pariters Billes.
  • Billes of Sicknes.
  • And all other Coppies, Chartes, & thinges what­soeuer, to bee Imprinted, Roled, or done vpon the one side of Paper or Parchment, in Secretary hand or otherwise.

And if any shall haue occasion to vse the Premisses, let them repayne to the House of Edward All-de. Printer, dwelling in Penticost-Lane neere Butchers-Hall, at the East end of Christ-Church, where they shall be reasonably dealt with for the same.
