EEBO-TCP is a partnership between the Universities of Michigan and Oxford and the publisher ProQuest to create accurately transcribed and encoded texts based on the image sets published by ProQuest via their Early English Books Online (EEBO) database (http://eebo.chadwyck.com). The general aim of EEBO-TCP is to encode one copy (usually the first edition) of every monographic English-language title published between 1473 and 1700 available in EEBO.

EEBO-TCP aimed to produce large quantities of textual data within the usual project restraints of time and funding, and therefore chose to create diplomatic transcriptions (as opposed to critical editions) with light-touch, mainly structural encoding based on the Text Encoding Initiative (http://www.tei-c.org).

The EEBO-TCP project was divided into two phases. The 25,363 texts created during Phase 1 of the project have been released into the public domain as of 1 January 2015. Anyone can now take and use these texts for their own purposes, but we respectfully request that due credit and attribution is given to their original source.

Users should be aware of the process of creating the TCP texts, and therefore of any assumptions that can be made about the data.

Text selection was based on the New Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature (NCBEL). If an author (or for an anonymous work, the title) appears in NCBEL, then their works are eligible for inclusion. Selection was intended to range over a wide variety of subject areas, to reflect the true nature of the print record of the period. In general, first editions of a works in English were prioritized, although there are a number of works in other languages, notably Latin and Welsh, included and sometimes a second or later edition of a work was chosen if there was a compelling reason to do so.

Image sets were sent to external keying companies for transcription and basic encoding. Quality assurance was then carried out by editorial teams in Oxford and Michigan. 5% (or 5 pages, whichever is the greater) of each text was proofread for accuracy and those which did not meet QA standards were returned to the keyers to be redone. After proofreading, the encoding was enhanced and/or corrected and characters marked as illegible were corrected where possible up to a limit of 100 instances per text. Any remaining illegibles were encoded as <gap>s. Understanding these processes should make clear that, while the overall quality of TCP data is very good, some errors will remain and some readable characters will be marked as illegible. Users should bear in mind that in all likelihood such instances will never have been looked at by a TCP editor.

The texts were encoded and linked to page images in accordance with level 4 of the TEI in Libraries guidelines.

Copies of the texts have been issued variously as SGML (TCP schema; ASCII text with mnemonic sdata character entities); displayable XML (TCP schema; characters represented either as UTF-8 Unicode or text strings within braces); or lossless XML (TEI P5, characters represented either as UTF-8 Unicode or TEI g elements).

FIrſt, that all fathers, gouernours, and rulers of ſuch as be of tender age, do teache and bryng vp them in the knowledge of ſhooting: And that euery man, hauing a man chylde, or men chyldren in his houſe, ſhall prouide, ordayne, and haue in his houſe for euery man chylde beyng of the age of .vii. yeres and aboue, tyll he ſhall come to the age of .xvii. yeres, a bowe and two ſhaftes, to induce and learne them and bryng them vp in ſhooting, and ſhall deliuer all the ſame bowe and arrowes to the ſame young men to vſe and occupie: And if the ſame young men be ſeruauntes, that then their maiſters ſhall abate the money that they ſhall pay for the ſame bowes and arrowes, of their wages. And after all ſuch young men ſhall come to the age of .xvii. yeres, euery of them ſhall prouide and haue a bowe and .iiii. arrowes, continually for hym ſelfe at his proper coſtes and charges, or els of the gyft or prouiſion of his frendes, and vſe and occupie the ſame in ſhooting, as is before rehearſed. And if the maiſter ſuffer any of his ſeruauntes taking wages, beyng in his houſholde, and vnder the age of .xvii. yeres, or the father ſuffer any of his ſonnes beyng in his houſholde, and vnder the age of .xvii. yeres, to lacke a bowe and two arrowes, contrary to the fourme of this eſtatute, by the ſpace of one moneth together: then the maiſter or father in whom ſuche negligence ſhalbe, ſhall for euery ſuche default forfaite. vi. s. viii. d. And that euery ſeruaunt paſſing the age of .xvii. yeres, and vnder the age of .lx. yeres, and taking wages, whiche can or is able to ſhoote, and ſhall lacke a bowe and .iiii. arrowes by the ſpace of one moneth together, ſhall for euerye ſuche default forfaite and loſe .vi. s. viii. d.

Item, that no perſon by him ſelfe, factor, deputie, ſeruaunt, or other perſon, ſhall for his or their gayne, lucre, or liuing, kepe, haue, holde, occupie, exerciſe, or mayntayne any common Houſe, Alley, or place of Bowlyng, Coytyng, Cloiſe, Coiles, halfe Bowle, Tennis, Diſing, Table or Carding, or any other maner of game prohibited by any ſtatute heretofore made, or any vnlawfull newe game nowe inuented or made, or hereafter to be inuented, founde, had, or made, vpon payne to forfaite and pay for euery day keping, hauing, mayntayning, or ſuffering any ſuche game to be had, kept, executed, played, or mayntayned, within any ſuche Houſe, Garden, Alley, or other place, contrary to the fourme and effect of this eſtatute .xl. s. and the players ſo taken, to pay for euery tyme .vi. s. viii. d.

Item, that the Iuſtices of peace, and euery Maior, Shiriffe, Bayliffe, Conſtable, or other head officer, haue aucthoritie to enter into all places aſwell within frauncheſis as els where, and the perſons offending in any of the premiſes, to take and put in priſon, vntyll ſuche tyme they put in ſuerties no more to ſuffer, occupie, or commit the ſayde offences.

Item, that the Maior, Shiriffes, Bayliffes, Conſtables, and other head officers within euery Citie, Borough, and Towne within this Realme, where any ſuche officers ſhall fortune to be, aſwell within the fraunchiſes as without, ſhall make due ſearche weekely, or at the furtheſt at all tymes hereafter once euery moneth, in all places where any ſuche Houſes, Alleys, play or playes ſhalbe ſuſpected to be had, kept, and mayntayned. And if the ſayd Maiors, Sheriffes, Bayliffes, Conſtables, and other head officers, within their Cities, Borowes, and Townes, aſwell within frauncheſis as without, do not make due ſearche at the furtheſt once euery moneth, if the caſe ſo require, according to the tenor of this acte, and do not execute the ſame in all thinges according to the purport and force of the ſame: that then euery ſuch Maior, Sheriffes, Bayliffes, Conſtable, or other head officer, to pay and forfayte for euery moneth not makyng ſuch ſearche, nor executing the ſame .xl. s.

Item, that no artificer or handicraftes man of any occupation, Huſbandman, Apprentice, Labourer, ſeruaunt of huſbandry, Iorneyman, or ſeruaunt, or Artificer, Marriner, Fiſherman, Waterman, or any ſeruing man, may vſe any vnlawfull game.

Item, that all that play at Bowles or any other vnlawfull game in the fieldes, to loſe for euery ſuch time .vi. s. viii. d. and to be committed to pryſon, vnto ſuche tyme they put in ſuerties no more to vſe the ſame.

Item, this ſtatute to be proclaymed .iiii. times euery yere, and the like to be done in all aſſiſes and ſeſſions, and to continue for euer.

Memorandum, that there is a prouiſo in this ſtatute, for all men of worſhip which may diſpende, C.li. yerely and vpwardes, may vſe theſe games with diſcretion at their pleaſures.
